Sandro's Story

When I got back to Italy I stop playing soccer and start working. After about one year I had to go to the Army. I was sent to the mountain troops (Alpini) which is one of the best Italian military corp.; very famous after WWI. I left the army as sergeant major. When I got back I got married. I have two children; one girl and one boy. Now they are 38 and 32 years old. After some years I was able to get the job I was looking for: to be an external sales engineer. With this job I could travel a lot in Italy and in the world; in many countries more times. This let me understand also a lot of different mentalities which is something I like especially after my experience in USA. I started to play chess as well for hobby, but I stop soon as I had not time enough to play at high level as I would like. I decided to move my chess ideas in the computer field as in 1976 there were available some electronic chess boards, but my ideas were too advanced and it took me some years to be able to get them accepted. In 1976 I stated that just after year 2000 the computers would have reached the top chess player level and the strong chess players were laughing at me. This happen exactly as I expected. I had clear in mind what was needed and started to make part of it and waited a partner to make the other needed part. In 1995 I won the world chess championship title together with a great American programmer who worked also for NASA and suggested him an algorithm for auto-learning which turned out to be quite good and the first one to really be effective! After that I won another 14 world computer chess championship titles as part of a team of two people. It was my hobby until 2014 when I retired from competitions.. Meanwhile, in 2004, the company for which I worked moved the office from north Italy to center Italy (Lucca; near Pisa (where there is the famous leaning tower is) and Florence) and wanted me to move as well to rebuild the sales office and train new people to hire. My job was Office ...Expand for more
Sales Manager and had to move with my family too. I moved. It was a hard and intensive job, but everything went well. In the last 7 years we increased the sales as an average of nearly 30% every year together with the profit! After that they asked me to make a quotations software to be used worldwide, Previously no was succeed to make one judged good enough. I did inventing it from scratch, managing a skilled programmer made available. We shared the job as we had to make it, in less than a year. We did much more than requested and we save also a lot of money. The program was speeding up the quotes and could reduce the people to make quotes, but was sending data also to the production. It how has been used by everybody in our company. To make it I had to use my many years experience about valves and actuators and my great, fantasy and knowledge achieved with the chess programs too.. After this the General Manager wanted me to be also the Manager for training the people worldwide as extra job! So, I had 3 jobs: Sales Office Manager Training Manager Sales dept. software Manager About 2 years ago I was asked to be involved in a big software project, to be made in UK using a management software made by Microsoft, so adding this new job,I could not keep all my positions and kept the position of Software Manager and the Training Manager. This new project will include many of the ideas of my still used program. Some parts have been copied as much as possible. We are still working on this development, also now that I work for Rotork as consultant. I retired end of June 2016. In 2010 I partecipated to a world tournament of advanced chess and got 6th. Recentrly I retired from computer chess competition and keep chess only as hobby. In 2017 I started to play correspondance chess and I am doing it as a hobby! So, I still live in the house I bought in a beautiful city called Lucca, not far away from the sea (half an hour by car). What can one ask more? Well, some free time of course!:-)
