Sandy's Story
Life
Worked various jobs after graduation.
Attended Chaffey College for some classes
Some lack luster jobs including Security Guard at Ontario Airport searching carry on baggage for weapons for $2.00 an hour.
Met first girlfriend.
Heart broken again.
Met second girlfriend.
Moved to Orange County.
Worked at electronics manufacturing plant soldering circuit boards.
Got first motorcycle as sole transportation, a Yamaha 175 Enduro.
Formed "Christian Lesbian Commune" as artist making bread dough sculptures with scripture, selling at mall shows and on consignment at Knotts Berry Farm book store and a small room at Marantha Villiage (if they only knew we were Lesbians).
Very enjoyable time, working hard and having a hard time keeping artwork stocked, but loving every moment sculpting and riding motorcycle everywhere.
We could not keep our wares stocked, so that was keeping us very busy.
The commune fell apart due to some concerns of some people "skating" while others worked harder and money issues.
I moved back to Riverside area and bought my first house with a partner.
Got a job at Pacific Telephone in 1978 (now called at&t).(retired 10/2009)
Decided I should go back to men because of traditional religious teachings and moved out of that house to live alone for awhile.
Met my future husband at work.
An African American divorced man with 4 children living with him.
He was aware of my history.
Married 1982, separated in 1987, Divorced 1988. This attempt seemed to be a mistake, although I truly loved that family, I should not have made such waves, but I cannot change that.
I hope he is very happy now but it was not possible for this to work.
Met Betty in 1987,
I am in a committed registered domestic partnership with her to this day (now married pre-Prop 8 "vote").
I never had any children of my own.
Our 2 dogs, one of which lived 19+ years are in doggie heaven now. Currently we have a cat which has adopted us. This cat has become a fixture here and companion.
I worked 31.5 years at Pacific Telephone, Pacific Bell, SBC, now called at&t.
The first 20 years, I was climbing poles and installing and repairing phones and wiring in homes and businesses.
I transferred to Northern California with my job and we now own a modest, but nice home in Sonoma County. We fixed it...Expand for more
up and put in a pool which is really an above ground pool, but we dug down and put decks around it.
Northern California is more to my liking, but what's left of my family are all still in the Inland Empire area with some back east.
I was tired of working too much overtime and climbing poles, so took a transfer indoors, wiring phone lines for DSL and all manner of telecommunications.
I now have another motorcycle (Yamaha 650 V Star Classic) after reaching mid life "crisis".
I live a modest outdoorsy lifestyle and enjoy some traveling to Lake Tahoe and Coastal areas. Would like to travel around in a camper when Betty retires in about 5 years.
Last November Betty & I joined 2 younger (late 20's) friends for backpack hiking to (in the rain) Pt. Reyes in Coastal mountainous region.
I barely made it having been a long time smoker, but I quit smoking for my 40th birthday. I consider it an accomplishment and hope to get in better shape and do it again some day.
We have kayaks and go flat water kayaking, sometimes go "paddle in" camping.
I retired in 2009 after 31.5 years with now AT&T and so far not returned to work. Living life modestly within means and thankful for what I have.
I lost my sister in law, Gayla in August of 2008, my Dad, Howard in August 2010, my aunt also in 2010, and my brother Bill just 3 months ago on April 8, 2012. I am very sad to report this sad news and miss them all very much.
I feel somewhat guilty because now my Mom is alone 470 miles away from me, but my brother Steve is in Redlands with his family. Nephew Chris (Bill's son) is in Ontario Mom is getting along all right and I am glad for her community where she has friends and neighbors to socialize with regularly.
I have my roots now in Northern California, so moving closer to her is not likely unless she has need for daily care. She no longer drives, but thankfully her health is stable.
My family is smaller with other aunts and uncles passed away.
Betty lost her father from Parkinson's and brother to cancer this year (2012). Two sisters recently survived breast cancer, still struggle without jobs and needing health care. This has been a very rough recent years.
We are hopeful for better days ahead and move forward. Always hoping for people to have jobs, health and happiness.
