Sanford H.'s Story
In 1998, Sanford retired from active duty as a Naval Chaplain in the United States Navy after a 22-year naval career in uniform. Under President Clinton, Rabbi Shudnow received the prestigious Presidential Meritorious Service Medal for his service at his last assignment. There he served 5½ years as Department Head (Jewish) and Staff Chaplain at the world-class National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, which services the President, Congress and the Supreme Court.
Rabbi Shudnow’s naval career included service at sea and ashore throughout the U. S., as well as overseas in Japan and Italy, serving as Assistant Fleet Chaplain of the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean, where he served on six aircraft carriers, including the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY and the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, International Relations; a Master of Arts degree, Rabbinical Ordination and has the title Doctor of Divinity (h.c).
He is a well-known journalist, writing on topical issues of religion and ethics. Rabbi Shudnow’s inspirational Torah commentaries on Scripture have been a regular feature of the WASHINGTON JEWISH WEEK until 2011 have appeared in the AUSTRALIAN JEWISH NEWS since 2006.
Since coming to Sydney, Rabbi Shudnow became a member of the Australia Association of Jewish Studies. His learned articles and book reviews have appeared annually in the AUSTRALIAN JOURNAL OF JEWISH STUDIES since 2010. He is an accomplished artist, whose works have been exhibited throughout the U. S. and at various locations in Sydney, including at The Great Synagogue Sydney, Moriah College, Waverley Library Galleries and the Sydney Royal Arts and Crafts Show.
Sanford is now back in Maryland and very active in the community.
