Santiago's Story
After high school I attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. Upon graduation and commissioning into the Army as a second lieutenant of Infantry, I served in a variety of command and staff positions in combat units in the US, Korea, and Panama. Military qualifications include being a paratrooper and Ranger. Upon completion of graduate school at the University of North Carolina (Masters Political Science) I transitioned to the US Department of State to become a career diplomat. My diplomatic postings as a political officer and later as Consul General were at Embassys in Honduras, Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, Ethiopia, and Kuwait. In between were ...Expand for more
assignments to Washington DC. Those were the least enjoyable years. Obtained professional competency in Cantonese Chinese and Arabic. Was already fluent in Spanish. Studied Korean and Amharic (Ethiopian) extensively but cannot claim fluency. Became Visiting Professor of International Relations at West Point and later at the Philippine Military Academy. Am currently a foreign affairs consultant in WashDC and still teach and publish on the subject. My wife Ceres and I have been married for 43 years. We have 3 daughters, all of whom are highly educated foreign affairs professionals (diplomats and consultants). My pride are my three grandkids. Nothing else matters.
