Sarah's Story

Hello Classmates!!! I eagerly look forward to seeing you and reminiscing with you at our 50th Reunion. Do you find it as hard as I do to believe that it has been 50 years since we graduated? A little background before we meet. After high school I went to Cornell, graduating with a double major in History and Government. I joined the Foreign Service, working first in Washington, D.C., and then in Malaysia. While in Malaysia I met my husband of 28 years, Reg Collins. He was Honorary French Consul to Malaysia and a shipping executive with a Franco-Belgium shipping and plantation company. Together we had a very interesting, exciting, and challenging few years living in a country with an active communist insurgency. This was an experience that was not something that I had planned while living in Pullman. Reg had two daughters from a prior marriage and we shared the joy of watching them flourish into amazing women. Together we had one son, Michael, who with his wife and daughter live in New York City. Michael is an IT Consultant and currently working on an IT start up venture. After returning to the United States, I earned an MBA at WSU and changed my career path, turning to the financial services industry where I would spend the next 30 years. I entered the field via accounting and over time rose to be Head of Accounting at The Bank of America in San Francisco when it was the world's largest bank. While there I was honored to serve on the American Bankers Association Accounting Committee, eventually becoming the first woman to serve as Chair of an ABA Comm...Expand for more
ittee. I left Bank of America to go to Mellon Financial Corporation in Pittsburgh, becoming the first woman Controller of a major US bank. After moving from Finance to Credit, I became the only woman on Mellon's Senior Management Committee and the first woman to earn an Executive Vice President title at the firm. In the last third of my career, I worked in risk management, primarily in New York City, helping shape a nascent idea present at only a few financial institutions into a full fledged functional discipline, deemed indispensable. I was Co-Founder of the Buy Side Risk Manager's Forum, an industry group of the largest US based investment managers. I served as the Forum's first Secretary and later as its Vice-President. I live in Greenwich, CT, and commute each work day into New York City to care for my four year old granddaughter, Ava. I retired in 2011, choosing to become Ava's full time nanny rather than continuing as head of risk management for the $700 billion in assets managed at The Bank of New York Mellon's Cash Investment Strategies and Dreyfus mutual fund businesses. It was my best career move ever! I loved almost every second I worked. But being a grandmother trumps it all. After my husband passed away, I was lucky enough to find another good man to love, Michael Lucas, retired Vice Chair of Interbrand, a division of Omnicom. He will be joining me in attending our upcoming reunion. I look forward with excitement and anticipation to seeing you this weekend and to thanking you for all you did to help me along my way. Sarah
