Sarah's Story
Life
Life has been very good to me. At 45, I'm pretty healthy, have a job which I enjoy, and after hours participate in my life's avocation, which has always been music. I sing in two choirs, occasionally sub as an organist, and have performed as harpsichordist with Early Music groups. About two years ago, a life's dream came true when I travelled with my community choir to Europe. We performed in Austria, the Czech Republic, and Denmark. I actually got to stand in a house that Beethoven lived in, and heard an organ at Bach's church, the Thomaskirke. It really was fantastic!
Have also travelled to other places: Tennessee, New England, New York, the Pacific Northwest, Mexico. I really love to travel and meet new people and new cultures.
School
The happiest memories I have of school include the old Lunch Bunch (Cathy, Ruth, Marcie, Joyce, etc.) You guys were such great friends. And Miss Middleton's Spanish classes, especially foreign language day, when we got to exercise our dramatic chops. Who can forget the "terrifying" Frankenstein skit? Or La Bionica? Or El Tomate Gigante? Or M...Expand for more
onty Python in Spanish? Who can forget the infamous Burrito Busts? (I heard some people actually did bust wide open from too many burritos!)
College
I went straight to Cal State Fullerton after high school. Spent a year or two trying to decide what to major in, then settled on music history/theory. Never really directly applied it to subsequent career, but I knew it was the one time in my life I would get to seriously study the thing I love most in life, so I went for it! Unfortunately, not many positions for music history teachers out there, so I did something else after I graduated from college in 1981.
Workplace
I worked at an insurance company during the early and mid '80's, but didn't like it much. I joined the L.A. County Sheriff's in 1987 as a civilian employee. The last six years I was there were the best. I worked as an Ombudsperson and an Affirmative Action officer. In that capacity, I helped to make things right between employees and management. I just started a new job at L.A. Co. Children's services in Employee Relations, and that job is proving to be very interesting.
