Sarah's Story

When I graduated from Crestwood, I ambitiously dreamed of Architecture and persued it at Georgia Tech. Didn't know what I was asking for but I sure found out. I didn't really enjoy the all night projects and the esoteric, existential days after when I pondered the meaning of certain two syllable words (like shampoo, where did this word come from?)and wondered what the big bright thing was in the sky. I now know that it is the sun. Anything is beautiful, deep or meaningful when you are seriously sleep and nutrient deprived as me and many of my colleagues were). I guess the diet of No Doz (Caffiene tablets- not illegal stimulants), Coca-Cola, and snickers caught up with me. Wanted to change my major to International Affairs because of my passion for languages but it was not yet offered at Tech. so I jumped the M train as they say at Tech. That means I tried to take the easy way out through Management. Oh well, after failing Calculus II, Biology, and Physics (I successfully passed Calc I), I had difficulty adding and subtracting and thus could not even get through math for management (Pre-calc). That was the end of Ga. Tech. I spent many years trying to reinvent myself. I tried child care/nanny jobs which I absolutely loved. I have thousands (only a slight exageration) of pictures of eight month- old babies with big beautiful eyes most of them blue, all of whom I count myself blessed to have been able to influence. Nevertheless, I was always hoping I'd find a way to finish my degree so I could find a truly challenging and rewarding career to suit my ambitions. In 1998 I ran into an old friend that I knew from Ga. Tech. -- though he was a Southern Techie. It just so happened that I was looking for changes in my life and really needed a good friend. Well, even though I had dated one of his good friends at Ga. Tech. so many moons before, it turns out that our chance encounter at Island Ford park was pure serendipity. I will never forget the date of our encounter, March 27th, 1998. This was the first birthday of one of the infants I help...Expand for more
ed to care for and nurture. He, the infant, is now eleven years old and has known me all of his life. His sister, now thirteen, has known me for all of her life (minus eight months). They make me very proud to have been a part of their family. I still am. I finally found a time and a place to return to school and completed a Bachelors degree in International Affairs at Kennesaw State University in December of 2007. I am eagerly and actively searching for a great and challenging career When I do find a place to start my glorious career, even if it is outside of my desired field, I will happily commit to staying here in GA (with cement gollashes on if need be). I know I really need to gain some strong "entry-level skills" to be a contender ("I coulda had class, I couda been a contenda!. I coulda been somebody."From Marlon Brando's famous "On the Waterfront" speech.) Unfortunately, as with motherhood, few people respect or admire the skills it takes to be a nanny or to raise other people's children, or Youts (My cousin Vinny) as I like to call them. Likewise, my valient effort in college and achievement of a 3.66 Cum Laude Honors Scholar does not seem to impress much in this economy. I just celebrated my 37th birthday. Whoop, whoop, whoop. There is no turning back now. Life can only get better with age. When I was in France taking classes and doing a dissertation/study on aging populations in Paris and Tours, an older gentlemen confided in me that as one gets older, life becomes more and more like swimming. "La vie, c'est comme nager!" While this sounds somewhat vague or existential, I find real truth there. When one is swimming one is relaxed, cool, refreshed, one's mind is more at ease, one is focused merely on strokes, taking breaths and making it to the end of the pool. I am in the process of editing my life story.... stay tuned....the husband thinks I am not so "yar" look it up on the internet and crossreference it with Cary Grant or Kathryn Hepburn from "Philidelphia Story". Looks like a new story will soon begin for me. Peace.
