Saundra's Story
It has taken all of these years, but I have finally had one of my poems published in a book about the life of General Edward Hirsch. One of the finest men I have ever had the privilege to know.
The Old General walked a little slower in his later years
And was subject to remembering days long ago.
Sometimes he told the same story a time or two,
But they always made us smile, and sometimes cry.
He remembered when every man saluted ¿his¿ beloved Flag
And graciously smiled with thanks when a soldier passed by.
When ¿Duty¿ and ¿Honor¿ were more than mere words.
When tomorrow and freedom were worth fighting for.
He remembered fellow soldiers who fell by his side.
He remembered how they fought for all that was right.
He remembered how they wanted to live the good life we do,
And He remembered how and when each one died.
And with each story, every time ...Expand for more
it was told,
The soldiers long gone lived anew in our midst.
As long as he told of their ¿Sacrifice and Honor¿
It was as if they still lived in our hearts.
As he watches down on us from above
Surrounded by these soldiers from days gone by,
They must wonder who will keep their memories alive
Now that the Old General has died.
Who will step up and tell these old stories
Of ¿Honor¿ and ¿Service¿ and ¿Dedication¿ to the Flag?
Who will remember all the past soldiers?
Who out there will keep their ¿Honor¿ and ¿Memories¿ alive?
Dedicated In Loving Memory to General Edward Hirsch and all of the friends his stories allowed us to know. May all of your memories live on for generations to come in the hearts of grateful, proud, Americans.
