Scot's Story

Wha' do ya mean it's been 21 years? Are you sure? Where's a calculator? Wow!! Let's see if I can remember THAT far back... While still in High School I signed up for the US Army then finally went off with them to fly helicopters six months after graduating. After training I volunteered to go to Germany for a couple of years and, liking it so well, ended up staying for four (except for a little trip to Saudi Arabia and Iraq for Desert Shield/Desert Storm in '91). I then came back to Raleigh, joined the NC Nat'l Guard Aviation unit at RDU, returned to my old job at the airport, and enrolled at NCSU to continue to pursue the degree I started overseas. I became reacquainted with a fellow SHS '87 graduate, dated for a while, and ended up marrying her in '94. It didn't work out! We tried to make it work for the next five years but ultimately it failed, sadly not before sacrificing my military career. Fortunately we did not have any children to get mixed up in divorce, but oddly enough, she and I remained friends through and afterwards; just married too young perhaps. On my own again and a bit older now, I started a job with the City of Raleigh and am still there after 13 years. A few years ago at church one day I met a lovely young lady fro...Expand for more
m out-of-town and began a relationship that has lead to 5 years of wonderful marriage and two great little boys that I'm proud and privileged to be the father of. We live in Raleigh and are living happily ever after. I often think back about the many people I knew and remember from Sanderson, what and where they might be, how things could've been different if situations were changed. And sometimes I wish I had taken a different direction in my life. But we can't change the past, and in reality can only hope to have some influence on the future. Having realized late last year that it was actually 20 years ago that we graduated SHS, the curiosity that I suppressed for years began to get the better of me until last week when I came across a name on the internet that piqued my curiosity. With technology and websites like this one, it's surprisingly easy to reconnect, reminisce, and realize how time passes so quickly. Some have been wondering where I've been all these years. Interestingly enough I went far away, saw and did a lot, then came back home and have been here the whole time, just not very obvious. Meanwhile, it seems many others have become scattered all over the country. Here comes that curiosity again. Wow! Where'd the time go?
