Scott's Story
Life
I grew up in West Jordan, Utah, in a family of seven. After graduating from West Jordan HS, I attended Pacific U. in Forest Grove, OR for a year, just to get outside the Zion Curtain. From 1992-94 I served a full-time LDS mission to South Texas. As a Spanish-speaking missionary in the Texas Corpus Christi Mission, I served in Pharr, Harlingen, Kingsville, Brownsville, and last of all, San Diego (a small town of 2500 where I helped establish a branch). It was awesome.
I returned home in 1994 and attended BYU, completing a B.S. in Sociology in 1997. I loved BYU, and got really excited about theory and philosophy my last two years--which lead to grad school. In the summer of 1996 I worked at the Anasazi Foundation (anasazi.org) in Mesa, AZ, an adolescent wilderness treatment program, and little did I know how important that decision would be! Not only were the program's philosophies life-changing, but that is also where I met my future wife, Shauri Goldthwaite. I had a total crush on Shauri, but she was dating my roommate at the time. I was actually glad when she left on a mission to Temple Square, so I could write to her and get a second chance. We wrote and continued to be good friends, but Shauri didn't think I was her type. :P
After BYU, I moved to Auburn, AL to work on an M.S. in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT). Shauri had a change of...Expand for more
heart following her mission, and decided I was the only one for her. :) We were married in December 1998 after a phone and e-mail courtship, and settled into a little 3-room apartment. Our daughter Adelaide was born the following November. She is amazing.
By the time Adelaide arrived, we had moved to Ames, IA, where I began work on a Ph.D. in MFT. We now have four children, Adelaide, Cathan, Sarah, and Joseph. Shauri completed a B.S. in Music (vocal performance) at Iowa State U. in 2004--she was actually in labor with Sarah when she was writing her last final paper! She has a marvelous voice, and worked for a time directing choirs after she graduated. Currently she spends most of her time homeschooling our kids (she uses the Thomas Jefferson Education model).
I worked as a family therapist in private practice from 2001 to 2007; now I work at for an agency in Burlington, Iowa. I see mostly couples (for marital counseling) and children. While we were in Ames I had a great job as the guidance counselor at a Catholic school, a very rewarding job! I taught college at Northcentral University and Des Moines Area Community College in 2006, and in 2007 we moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa (in the Nauvoo Illinois Stake).
Our fourth child was born in February 2007. We love it in southeastern Iowa, and it looks like we will settle down and stay here awhile.
