Scott's Story

Life Greetings! Since I initially posted a biography on this web site last year, I have relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, in East Africa. I am the Chief Financial Officer for a small British company that contracts with the United Nations, United States Agency for International Development, U.S. State Department, and a variety of multilaterals, non-profits and NGOs. We provide refugee relief services and disaster emergency assistance to post-conflict regions in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as develop economically viable export businesses for underprivileged tribal groups in Northern Kenya and Southern Sudan. I am thrilled that the Southern Sudanese peace agreement was just signed at the end of May this year. I hope and pray that the 21-year civil war will finally end and that we can provide better services to the millions of impoverished peoples in the region. However, the atrocities in the Western Sudan region of Darfur continue. I enjoyed visiting Nairobi, Kenya, for many years and had long desired to relocate here. It is a metropolitan city and the hub for East Africa. I learned to speak Swahili years ago and it is a shift to use it every day instead of once a year on vacations or in the classroom. The people are warm, friendly, and full of life. A bit of history since high school: Following Clearwater, I went to Ohio Wesleyan University (graduated: 1998) and majored in Economics Management with a minor in Accounting. Then, I went to work as an analyst for National City Bank and subsequently attended Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management. In 2001 I graduated with a Masters in Business Administration in General Management. Then, I moved to Chicago, still with National City Bank, as an Assistant Vice President. I was in Asset Structuring deciding on corporate monetary relationships and managing a portfolio of assets. Concurrently, I attended the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Business and received (graduated: 2003) another Masters in Business Administration, but this time in Finance and Accounting. In total, I worked with National City Bank for 6 years – ever since college! I began my doctorate studying the economic development of East Africa from Tulane University in 2003. While at my new job in Africa, I am conducting thesis research on a variety of topics. I do not know yet whether I will stay at Tulane for the entire doctorate, or transfer after the Masters. Tulane has an incredible focus on African development, but I may prefer to finish up in Europe – either at Cambridge University, the University of London, or the University of Bonn in Germany. I pray for guidance as I push forward. Due to the multi-faceted nature of this web site, my primary and secondary school biography was as follows: St. Paul's School, Belcher Elementary School, Oak Grove Middle School (completed: 1990) and Clearwater High School (graduated: 1994). Like everyone, I am involved in other charitable and church related activities. I enjoy traveling around Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and, of course, the U.S. and Canada. I have been terrible at keeping in touch, so I would be thrilled to hear from people. Be blessed and I look forward to catching up with everyone. Due to my current geographic predicament, I am not sure if I will now be able to attend the Clearwater 10-year reunion. My thoughts and prayers will be with you all as you have fun at the beach!
