Linda's Story

I consider myself to be very fortunate to have the life I have now. My growing up years were difficult (to say the least) but the difficulties and challenges I endured helped mold me into the person I am today. I have two sons whom I couldn't be prouder of, Jason 24 and Brennon 12. Jason is currently enrolled at Mid Western State University in Texas, currently under a cycling scholarship. Jason is a pro-cyclist and has cycled as recently as this last summer in Belgium on the Natiional Cycling Team. I have great admiration for the sport as it takes dedication, discipline and intensity. I enjoy spinning and my class lasts only an hour and I am whipped, I can't imagine cycling 75-100 miles on a regular training ride. My youngest son, Brennon is an avid basketball player. He loves anything to do with being outside. Living in our beautiful state of Colorado certainly permits us many opportunities to do just that. We hike, canoe, ski, mtn. bike, fish and whatever outside activity we can fit in. He is our whiz kid and will do well for himself someday. He is mature beyond his years and rationalizes things better than most of our politicians. I currently work for the school district and have come full circle in my career. I started out working for Lockheed Martin and worked my way up into procurement and stayed there for almost 12 years while going to school. At that time my plant was relocating to Palmdale and I had a choice to relocate or take a severance. I bravely took the severance and followed my deep passion for the culinary arts. I enrolled in the Culinary Arts School in Pasadena and became certified. For a time I worked as a Pastry Chef and did some independent catering. I realized that working my dream wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. I was making a fraction of what I had been making in aerospace and working three times as hard. I decided to work fro...Expand for more
m home with our youngest son by opening up a preschool. This was probably the most rewarding experience I could have ever had. I enjoyed the two years I had with my students before we made our move to Colorado. It was hard to leave our friends and family but the relocation was too good to pass up. My husband, Tom, works in aerospace and was offered a promotion in Boulder which offered a new life for us. Tom, my workaholic, loves what he does and can now put his heart and soul into his work and yet doesn't have to commute the 2 hours each way he did in California. We may not see him as much as we would like, but when we do we make the time count. Once Brennon began school I was again looking around for a job that worked around his school hours. I realized after raising my oldest son that I wanted to be home as much as possible to raise our youngest son. This is how I came to work for Nutrition Services for Adams 12 School District. My job entails working with Food Distributors and procurement of food. Instead of ordering airplane parts now, I order food for our 40 schools. I realize that my calling was still procurement, but I was able to change what I did so that I could enjoy it fully. The best part is having some time off in the summer so that I can enjoy my family. I don't look back anymore to the painful times during my childhood, but only look forward to the things I can do that make a difference in my life and those around me. I am much happier for it. I am much more outgoing than I once was. I enjoy gardening, cooking, skiing, hiking, photography, canoeing, fly fishing (that's my newest hobby and I am loving it), cycling, traveling, theatres and exercising. I enjoy making friends and realize how important they are in my life. I treasure the friends I have and look forward to making many more. I would love to hear from my classmates and read your stories.
