Scott's Story

Life My life biography is simple. I graduated from Mascoma June 1973 and went off to Dartmouth College that fall. Spent four years wrapping myself in the kind of social life that I never had the oppportunity for in high school, as "the principal's son". That kinda put a crimp into social matters.... I also worked two jobs (in the dining hall and at the old Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital as an EMT/Paramedic). I majored in theoretical math, minored in astronomy, cosmology, physics, American history, and music. We had to take courses in different catagories, since we are a liberal arts school, so spreading the wealth around wasn't hard to cover the major and minor requirements around. My major and two of my minors were done at the end of my sophmore year. I tried to have as much fun as possible and meet as many people from as many backgrounds as possible, while working throught the the other three minors. I should have been exhausted, but I was young and hyper (later read manic-depressive or bi-polar). Played varsity basketball and wound up good enough for semi-pro here in the states, and later on while in the military, I played 5 years for SV Munich making a lot of money (college funds for the kids) to make things comfortable. I can't say I ended up even close to the top of my class, but I did finish with honors in my major. No matter. Academics were only a small part of why I went to Dartmouth. I wouldn't change a thing if I were to do it again. Everything I've done on an academic level since then has put me at the top of my classes and won me an MSc Military Arts (USA, Ft Leavenworth), an MSc Strategic Intelligence (Institute for Strategic Studies, Bolling, AFB) and a MSc Astropysics(MIT). My academic advisor also tells me I'm 2 courses from a MA International Relations (USC) and 3 courses short of an MA in Russian Language and Culture). I doubt I pursue those or go further on a formal basis for PhD in Astropysics, I am rather burned out. I don't have the manic episodes anymore since the doctors diagnosed me as bi-polar. The medications really slow me down. They also create memory difficulties for me that affect my short term memory. A little tough to study under those conditions. Ah well, enough bragging on myself, with the exception of the astrophysics (which is a personal interest), the others were schools, programs the Army sent me to. The deal is they pay if you pass a course, you buy if you flunk it. Good incentive don't you think?! The only other profilee block I've done is the military one. But this and that one sort of fill in school, college, and workplace. Military Joined the Army in 1978 for a career in Military Intelligence. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I spent 4 years enlisted, becoming fluent in French, German, and Russian, as well as learning all about tactical intel opns. I married a beautiful black woman. We met while we were assigned to the Presidio of Monterey, CA. We had Scott, Jr while we continued training and went to our 1st assignments. She spent a year in El Paso, TX at Ft Bliss. I went to Augsburg, Germany, assigned to the 326th ASA Co and took part in Grenada. Sanita followed me 6 mos later. We had deployments, different shifts, different responsibles, school, and basketball, but we were young, in love,...Expand for more
and happy. Later I won a Direct Commission for rescuing 7 Czech refugees from a downed hot air balloon, while under fire, near the Czech E. German border. I returned to the US for tng while Sanita stayed in Germany with Scott, Jr. When I returned I had the chance to command 5 plts and my 1st co cmd co, while in the 502 MI Bn. I continued playing pro basketball (perks included a house, car and four 1st class air trips home every year). The trips home were great. We left after my stint as the Bn Opns Officer, our family was now 4, with a beautiful baby girl, Stephanie, age 3. Did some more tng at Ft Huachuca, AZ. Made Cpt, but divorce was coming. We went to San Angelo, TX, where the USAF has a base for all- Svc Intel tng. My 2d co cmd was here I where I had trained as a pvt in '79. We added Samuel to our family, but 2 yrs later when I left there in '88, Sanita went home to IN with the kids. I was devastated. The kids and I struggled to stay in touch, Sanita and I to remain civil. Eventually it worked out. The divorce was final in '91. I participated in the Panamanian opn and then deployed for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. I had come up thru the ranks quickly, but now my age started to be a factor in assignments, if not in promotions, which had been consistently early. The Army began to downsize, having been enlisted for 4 yrs was working against me for high cmd. I had done all the MAJ/LTC jobs, but younger men and women would get the COL slots. I'd still get the staff promotions, but no commands. I made a decision to resign, hit the Reserves as well as seek civilian employment. Began working as a grocery store manager, then subbed for a year at Mascoma for fun, then back to groceries. At the same time a buddy of mine came knocking in Jan 1992 with an offer to work for him forming up teams and a battalion command to work south of the border with the DEA to interdict drug cartel operations and train local Armies. Beyond that I can't say much. I got my promotion to major and a team cmd. I also met another sweet, beautiful lady, and we began living together in '93. So I stayed busy between the Reserves, and the grocery stores. My AR duty was very hardcore, although the deal was: in and out without being seen, without contact, reality was a bit harsher. One jump in NOV 94 cost my team and I dearly. The pilot put the plane 2000 m short and instead of a meadow, we hit a boulder field and we all broke bones. I broke my lower back in 3 places, crushed 2 discs, tore up my knees, shattered both ankles, and broke both feet. After rehab, I was ok for a while, given my 3d co cmd, with 10 teams. But I couldn't meet Army fitness standards and was medically retired in DEC 97, on the list for LTC and Bn Cmd. I had bounced back and forth between my civilian job and the Active Reserve from '92 until '97, But the civilians gave up on me in '99, 2 yrs after the Army. Job seaches came back negative. Applied for Social Security and VA Disability. The SSA came through, but only covered a few bills. I had nothing to live on. Things were very bleak for several years. As of MAY 02, I rated 100% disabled and as of AUG 04, I'm Permanently and Totally disabled (and on crutches), which means my children are eligible for educational assistance and medical care
