Sean's Story

"The details of my life are quite inconsequential..." -Doctor Evil, from Austin Powers I was always a "make up my own rules" kind of guy. Sometimes that controversial tendency comes back to bite me, alas. But it's been a great life. There's not much I'd change. I never grew up. Life's grand. The lovely lady in the pic is my wiser, prettier half Tatyana. She's wonderful. In that, as in all things, I'm a superbly fortunate man. And no, she didn't "make" me say that. ;-) I'm working for the government. Hardly seems an appropriate career for me, but hey - this is DC. I was with Justice for a huge chunk of my career, then Homeland Security. (I know people who knew me in high school will writhe in utter shock at this startling and ironic revelation!) DC is ultimately the world capital for pretentiousness. It's our primary export to the world, with politics a close second. DC's collective and unfortunate corporate culture is such that people here actually ask you what you do for a living before they ask your name. As if they're secretly wondering how much you make, or whether knowing you might make them more important. I found France to be a...Expand for more
refreshing breath of fresh air. When they ask what you do, they're inquiring as to what you love about life. We Americans identify ourselves too much with what we do. I've been quoting Fight Club since before the movie came out: "You are not your job." But I'm fortunate to have a job I don't hate that lets me give something back. Scary how quickly time passes by when you get to this age. I remember hearing that we get more patient with age. I think that untrue. Our perception of time changes to create that misperception. Time passes so quickly. To the younger perspective, we seem patient because a year seems like a month did then. Thanks to some of you for some especially warm, happy memories. Thanks to all of you who made my high school experiences a standard American cliche worthy of the Breakfast Club paradigm, and the Fast Times at Ridgemont High parody. Please don't misconstrue this comment as some cynical or offhanded criticism of our American High School experience. I wouldn't have had it any other way. I hope life treats you all well, and that you've enjoyed health, happiness, and success. If not, I hope you keep striving for it.
