Sean's Story

The Guru and the Guitarist For many years the yoga studio caught my attention, as I would make my way to work. One day I surprised myself by responding to, rather than ignoring the curiosity the place inspired. I decided to take my first yoga class. In walks a tall man with a long gray beard dressed in white, wearing a turban, and carrying a guitar case. Rather than beginning the class with yoga, he sat in front of the room and began speaking. Although the room was filled, it seemed as if he was speaking directly to me. He was like a fountain of wisdom, flowing eternal truths that resonated deeply within my mind. When I was a child I had a Bar Mitzvah. I took nothing of lasting value from the experience. After graduating college I read the bible from front to back. I was glad to know what was written on the pages, but the book did not affect me the way it does millions of others. I studied Kung Fu. I enjoyed it but I wasn¿t receiving the spiritual education I was seeking. I then went to the Kabbala Center in Beverly Hills. The spiritual wisdom appealed to me but it lacked the physical element my body craved. Late one night, I happened to tune into a movie about a young man who through a chance encounter begins a relationship with a spiritual teacher. After watching the movie I realized there is only so much one can learn from books. I sent out a prayer that I wanted to learn from someone I could see with my eyes and hear with my ears. I wanted a teacher. It was shortly after saying this prayer that I had the impulse to walk into the yoga studio for the first time rather than drive by it for the one thousandth. As I sat listening to the Guru speak, I couldn¿t help staring at the guitar he had next to him. I began attending his classes on a regular basis. I created an intention that one day my guitar would be laid out on the stage next to his. My intention grew into a burning desire I could feel in...Expand for more
my heart. I combined this with a visualization I could see in my mind. After about six months of attending class the Guru gave a lecture that compared life to the children¿s board game Chutes and Ladders. Rising into the realms of higher consciousness was compared to climbing up a ladder one rung at a time. As we climb higher, life becomes more challenging, even frightening. This is when most become fearful of the heights attained. If one desires to continue the progression it sometimes becomes necessary to hold onto the rungs of the ladder for dear life. This is when it becomes tempting to look down. And what do we see when we look down? Tantalizing chutes that tempt and distract us. Once we let go of the ladder, the chutes slide us right back down to where we started. This story had a profound impact upon me for it accurately described my spiritual experience. I went home and wrote a poem about what I had just heard. I attached the poem to some guitar riffs. The poem evolved into a song I called ¿Eye In The Sky.¿ I found a talented drummer and bass player and created a band. Naming a band is equally as difficult as naming a child but a name I liked came quickly, ¿Deputy Zero.¿ We recorded the song and I made a few copies. I approached the Guru after class and told him how I was inspired by his lecture and handed him a Cd of the song. We listened to it together. After the last note faded from the speakers he turned to me and said, ¿Bring your guitar to the next class.¿ I brought my guitar to the next class. When it was time for the chants he nodded at me to join him on stage. He rarely plays the same thing twice so I listened closely and improvised to the best of my ability. After class I thanked the Guru for allowing me to bring my guitar to class. He looked at me and said, ¿Keep bringing it.¿ Every class since that day I have been seated on stage to the Guru¿s left. I have become the Guru¿s Guitarist.
