Senora Tyler's Story

Life May 27, 2006 Senora Alexander was born in Los Angeles California. During her teen years she grew up in Ventura County California. She began studying theater and performing arts at Ventura College during the 1970’s. However, due to illness, losing a portion of her hearing as well as her sight she had to stop performing. She continued to attend college until she found her real calling in visual art. In college she met the instructor who inspired her to discover her hidden talent, which made a way for her to become an artist. Through her awe inspiring works of afro centric ceramic art, in Senora's own words, she clearly states the significance of what art means to her. "I want to communicate the inner journey we must take to be in touch with our own spirituality”. Senora did not want to think and feel the pain of what she has to endure with being ill. So she took her beliefs and aspirations to the next level. Working with ceramics has given her the freedom to think about the positive sides of life and to create art to express herself. Senora has been included in such exhibitions as that of the renowned Carnegie Art Museum and Gallery, in addition to many other impressionable art galleries in Ventura and Orange County. She has been accepted in several art shows and has won awards for her creativity in ceramic art. e life of each piece gives the creation a sense of physical incarnation into the personal linkage of those cultures that have touched my life. Creating art is an ongoing journey of evolution, one that is inseparable from my life journey. Therefore what I learn, what I touch, and what I experience at any moment finds its way into each aspect of my work. Her technique in glazing and firing shows that she is truly an artist to be recognized. Senora illustrates the derivation of her technique in ceramic art. When I see the vision I try to feel what it is that enhances the culmination of my inspiration to produce my works of art. I search for a relationship with my ancestors, the marvelous talented people of Africa. My work consists of emotional depth, which is difficult to articulate in any other way. However, by me celebrating the constant vigilance of African Americans, their resilience against oppression is manifest in my masks and it demonstrates the images of both power and strength. Anchored in her works of art is a movement, a gathering of moments that radiates the light of their origin. The masks that she envisions and create symbolize the myths and rituals of African people during our celebration of dance, music, and audience participation. She creates art that invites the viewer to travel with her in exploring the beauty and the mystery of ancient images. All within this world she works to confirm the reality of her own existence no matter how significant or insignificant it may be. Senora Fay Tyler Alexander
