One of Sensei-James's favorite quotes is:"To me, ultimately, martial arts means honestly expressing yourself. Now, it is very difficult to do. It has always been very easy for me to put on a show and be cocky, and be flooded with a cocky feeling and feel pretty cool and all that. I can make all kinds of phoney things. Blinded by it. Or I can show some really fancy movement. But to experience oneself honestly, not lying to oneself, and to express myself honestly, now that is very hard to do. -Bruce Lee I am not going to SHOW you my art. I am going to SHARE it with you. If I SHOW it to you, it becomes an exhibition, and in time it will be pushed so far into the back of your mind that it will be lost. But by SHARING it with you, you will not only retain it forever, but I, too, will improve. -Ed Parker Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend. -Bruce Lee". More about Sensei-James:"About me: James (Jim) Allen Fortner was born in Middlesboro, Kentucky on Friday November 12, 1971. Jim began his path in martial arts in September of 1982 at the age of ten. His first classes were in Yin Yang Kung Fu under Instructors Jan Robinson, Mark Collins, and then Active Grand Master Ray Reynolds on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee. Jim’s brother, Todd, now a part-time black belt in Yin Yang Kung Fu, was the one who got Jim into start taking classes. While under the tutelage of Instructors Robinson & Collins, he picked up a wide variety of styles, including Karate, Judo, Hapkido, Tai Chi, Kung Fu and Ninjutsu. The Ninjutsu came from Sensei Collins, who was also training Jim’s brother Todd, and continued this training for close to 5 years during and after his time under Sensei Robinson. Jim went as far as blue belt under Sensei Robinson until she decided to change styles of the class from Yin Yang Kung Fu to Shinto Ryu. The class soon dissolved after that and Jim and his brother then went under the tutelage of now Grand Master John Clifford Graves in Middlesboro, Kentucky in the summer of 1984. Jim endured some of the most intense and toughest training he ever endured, being almost fourteen years old and fighting full contact with grown men and seniors and recent graduates of high school. He followed Grand Master Graves to the YMCA and the Cumberland Gap National Park during the early 1990’s. During this time he reached as far as his 3rd Kyu Brown Belt. All the while, still continuing is Ninjutsu training. Jim took a nine year “hiatus” from martial arts to further his education and start a family. He received his Bachelors Degree from Lincoln Memorial University in 1994, and his MBA in 1999 also from LMU. While he was there he played college baseball and was involved in a fraternity Alpha Lambda Zeta that is a brother to a national fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon. Jim currently as a trade is involved his family business in the lumber and wood industry, BJ Fortner Hardwoods. He works in sales, management, export, and quality control. He has also worked in sales for two Fortune 50 companies. He worked in pharmaceutical sales at GlaxoSmithKline from 1999-2002, and Aramark Uniform Services from 2004-2007. In 1996, Jim married the former Sharon Elizabeth Asher Shelby from Pineville, Kentucky, and they have a daughter, Rebecca Elayne, who is also a 2nd Kyu Brown Belt in Yin Yang Kung Fu. She is on track to be the youngest Black Belt in school history. Even though he was on a “hiatus’, he did dabble a little in martial arts for about 2 years. Jim briefly studied Isshinryu Karate in Tazewell, Tennessee under Sensei Debbie Lay. Sensei Lay was a direct student under Master Harold Long of Knoxville, Tennessee. He studied during the summer between semesters and any free time he had. He received the rank of orange belt. In 1998, Jim assists Grand Master Graves in starting a new dojo at the National Guard Armory in Middlesboro, Kentucky. On February 3, 2002, Jim received his 1st Degree Black Belt in Yin Yang Kung Fu, all the while continuing his training while aiding Grand Master Graves as a junior instructor. Jim also aided in instruction when the class moved to Lincoln Memorial University to teach students for college credit and to the public, the dojo in Harrogate, Tennessee , and part time at the dojo in Tazewell, Tennessee, as well as the dojo’s return home to the National Guard Armory in Middlesboro, Kentucky. On May 18, 2010, Jim received his 5th Degree Black Belt and is not only continuing his training under Grand Master Graves, but he is also the instructor of a class of Yin Yang Kung Fu in Pineville, Kentucky. Jim also acts as Chief Business Officer for Grand Master Graves and the System. siness operations and negotiations for the System. ABOUT OUR CLASSES Yin Yang Daio Kwoon Kung Fu is a chain of four martial arts schools covering KY & TN: Middlesboro(home school): 1653 hwy 25 (next to State Farm Insurance) Tues & Thrs 7-9pm Pineville : New Heights Church (next to Subway) 6:30-8:30pm Mondays &Thursdays Barbourville : Ky Elite Gymnastics Behind Long John Sivers 7-9pm Mondays & Thursdays Tazewell: Fitness Forever 865 Hwy 33 south (below American Furniture) Mondays & Thursdays 7-9pm Our style is a freestyle martial art combining the traditional past with modern day defenses. It succeeds in blending the philosophy of Yin (soft) and Yang (hard) strikes, blocks and movements. Hard style has straight and angular movements, where soft style has circular, deflecting movements. Although we keep tradition, we are flexible enough to change with the needs of today's defenses and the student's body type, where before, traditionally, you had to do things a certain way and that way only, even if it didn’t fit you. Our style has taken out the religious aspects of the training. For instance, we do not bow to any shrines, weapons, or ancestors. The founders of this style took the best techniques of the available martial arts (Chinese, Japanese, Okinawan, and Korean) and combined them into one style. Each Grand Master, through the generations, has studied at least 4 styles and has earned black belts, teaching license, and masters rank in them. Using this method, one could learn 12 different applications or techniques to counter the same method of attack. This allows the student to get a broad knowledge of different styles. It enables them to be able to pick a defensive technique that suits their body type and their personality. Regardless of ones height, build, left/right handedness, or any other physical limitations, one will find techniques that will best fit them and learn 11 more different ways to fall back on. There is an equal opportunity for all ages, heights, and sizes for both men and women. Styles that have been incorporated are: Japanese Karate = Jujitsu, Judo, Aikido, Shotokan, and Ninjutsu. Korean Tae Kwon Do = Moo Duk Kwan, Tang Soo Do, Hwarang Do, and Hapkido. Okinawan Karate = Isshinryu, Goju Ryu, Shorin Ryu, Shitoryu, and Wado Ryu. Chinese Kung Fu = White Eye Brow, Crane, Tiger, Snake, Eagle, Praying Mantis, Monkey, Golden Dragon, Wing Chun, Kempo, and Tai Chi. For an in depth look at how our style has developed over the years, read our history. We will teach to those that show an interest and willingness to learn and follow self-discipline. Our focus is on being street combat ready, not on competition. Because the learning environment is friendly and supportive, members feel like they are part of an extended family. This makes practice sparring more fun and less stressful. In addition, we emphasize first seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts and using skills for self-defense only. Students are forbidden to use these dangerous techniques in any unethical way. HOME PAGE 2 You will learn: Open hand and closed hand techniques blocks, strikes, kicks, knees, and elbows Throws Grappling and ground fighting Free sparring (Randori) Modern self-defense Weapons Forms (Katas) Not only will the applications work, but also they will trickle into their daily life like how to walk away from a fight or the proper way to lift something without hurting yourself. It builds confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline, and mental acuity. Students will gain muscle tone and many experience weight loss. The exercises alone will help you to develop flexibility, strength, balance, coordination and stamina through a routine which includes stretching, cardiovascular exercise, and dynamic tension. The class format includes an initial 45 minutes of exercises, a 15 minute break, and then an hour of instruction. Usually, three or more black belts are at each class to personally assist students who may need additional help. Also, depending on your schedule, you may choose to attend from two to three classes per week. Students with prior martial arts experience will be ranked according to their knowledge and abilities. Most students when entering a new style, have to start at the bottom again as a white belt and spend time to move up. Here we watch and rank from what you already know from previous styles. We don’t believe in holding you back, and the more willingness and capability you show to learn, the more we will teach you. Tuition Plans: The prices below have remained the same for the last 40 years. We don’t do this for a living; every black belt has another source of income or job. We do this for the love of the martial art. All money goes back into the schools for supplies, utilities, etc. 1) Individual = $30 per month 2) Family/Buddy Plan = $20 for each family member or friend 3) By the Class Plan = $5 per class Members may attend any of our dojos without additional cost There is no Testing Fee!!! You don’t have to drive a long distance and pay $100 - $1,000 and take a chance of not passing and losing the money or it being held until you do pass. The Grand Master travels from school to school (keeping check on them) with a Black Belt Board, teaching, and ranking students. We offer the initial 2 classes for free. That way you can decide before ever investing any of your hard earned money.
