Serafina's Story
Life
I was so shy at ISB that I doubt anyone remembers me... but I got over that soon after arriving in Honolulu, where I went to college and stayed 25 long years! I went to Chaminade College (a Jesuit private college) and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I studied fine art and went on to get my BFA and MFA in ceramic sculpture and art history at the University of Texas. I moved there with my husband, whom I am divorced from these days. I never had any children, but continued my studies at the Kansas City Art Institute and then graduate work back at the University of Hawaii. Too much in between to relate here...but today, I'm living on Whidbey Island, a very beautiful, rural alternative community in Washington State, near Seattle - and I make a living as a licensed massage therapist. I'm also a drummer. I play middle eastern drums and an African djembe. I play devotional Buddhist and Hindu music mostly and I've played for 10 years for the Dances of Universal Peace. I also write poetry and I'm just beginning to put a book together of my poems written as a young girl in Thailand! Not so shy anymore... I'm a healthcare provider and an active member in my community. I changed my name 4 years ago to Serafina, ...Expand for more
but have kept my married name, Strickland. At ISB I believe I went by my old nickname, Buffy, but nobody has dared to call me that for at least 20 years... :-}
I took a lot with me when I left Thailand.... I became a Buddhist, and a vegetarian, and I practice Thai Yoga massage and Auyurvedic nutrition for myself and my clients. I have also spent a couple of decades studying other spiritual paths and I have been a Sufi dervish for about 10 years. I study and practice ancient Celtic Pagan spirituality and Druidism (no that's not witchy stuff...) I recently bought an old farmhouse on 2-1/2 acres in the country and restored it (yikes! It's dark out here...) and I just moved in with my two dear kitties, Seal and Otter. It's the third home I've built in the past 6 years, so I guess I work as a contractor, too. Me in a suit??? Yup, I did the corporate world thing for about 20 years before I gave it up to pursue things I love. Not sure what else to tell you all except that I have been dear friends with Karen McClay (remember our home-ec teacher!) for all these years... we've grown up together. Turning 50 this Winter brings me to reflect on what my next chapter will hold... Serafina (Buffi to all of you, I guess...)
