Sergio's Story

I graduated with the class of Winter 1967. I then decided to go to East Los Angeles College. Since I did not know exactly what I wanted to become, I took the general classess to prepare me for a State college . The first year I did not go out for Cross Country or track and just tried to adjust to college life. The second year, I decided to run cross country and help our team... it was good to run again, also went out for track. Glad I did, I ran my best times ever. After two years of college my deferment ran out and had to renew it. It was the summer then, and I received my draft notice. No biggi all my brothers had gone through that... just report and I would continue with my studies. Wrong !! Uncle Sam had other ideas. I was drafted and sent to Fort Ord, California. I went through Basic Training and then Advanced Infantry Training. After completing this training, I was given a pass to go home but with orders to report for Vietnam service afterwards. I reported and was sent to Vietnam where I joined Charlie company 1st of the 327th 101 st Airborne Division. I underwent two more weeks of in country training and was sent to the jungles of Vietnam. I was a grunt walking point mostly in Phu Bai, Hue and finally Quan Tri. It was in Quan Tri province going to the A Shau Valley that I was wounded. I was extremely lucky and got out of there alive and was Medivac back to the "WORLD". I spent three months in the hospital and then served the rest of my service in Fort Lewis, Washington. After that, I went back to ELAC to finish up a couple of classes I needed for State College. I had a friend who was attending Cal State Long Beach University so I decided to go there. I major in Spanish and studied Linguistics and got a teaching degree. Subsequently, I started teaching at LA Unified as a day to day substitute t...Expand for more
eacher and then as permanent substitute teacher at Vista Unified School district (near Escondido). At Cal State Long Beach I was working as a tutor in the EOP program and it was there where I met my future wife Gloria. After working for about a year teaching, I decided to study computer programming and I then got a job working as a computer operator with Carter Hawley Hale and after working there for a year I applied and started working for the State Compensation Insurance Fund as a programmer. It was then that I decided to marry Gloria. We had to move to San Francisco area and I worked there for a couple of years. Truly great times. My wife and I missed our families so we moved back to the LA area. I worked for Mcdonald Douglas Automatic Division. We bought a house in West Covina and started raising our children. After a couple of years I left Mcdonald to work for Southern California Edison. We lived in West Covina for about 10 years and move to Chino Hills where we live now. We had three daughters: Michelle, Leticia and Melinda and are now all grown up. My oldest Michelle graduated got her Masters degree in education taught for one year but she heard her true calling and will be joining the "Sisters of Life" in New York. Our second daughter Leticia was in the fast track in life and had a child right after high school. She is now raising our grandaughter Madellynn, going to work and is in her Junior year in Cal State Fullerton Our third daughter Melinda is in her Senior year in San Diego State and will be graduating as interior design next year and is enjoying studying in England and will go to Spain next. So we are now almost out of a job as parents and will be celebrating our 30th Aniversary. So I been lucky and end up with a wonderful family. Lived some tough times but life has been good to me.
