Sergio Medina:  

I graduated with the class of Winter 1967. I then decided to go to East Los Angeles College. Since I did not know exactly what I wanted to become, I took the general classess to prepare me for a State college . The first year I did not go out for Cross Country or track and just tried to adjust to college life. The second year, I decided to run cross country and help our team... it was good to run again, also went out for track. Glad I did, I ran my best times ever. After two years of college my deferment ran out and had to renew it. It was the summer then, and I received my draft notice. No biggi all my brothers had gone through that... just report and I would continue with my studies. Wrong !! Uncle Sam had other ideas. I was drafted and sent to Fort Ord, California. I went through Basic Training and then Advanced Infantry Training. After completing this training, I was given a pass to go home but with orders to report for Vietnam service afterwards. I reported and was sent to Vietnam where I joined Charlie company 1st of the 327th 101 st Airborne Division. I underwent two more weeks of in country training and was sent to the jungles of Vietnam. I was a grunt walking point mostly in Phu Bai, Hue and finally Quan Tri. It was in Quan Tri province going to the A Shau Valley that I was wounded. I was extremely lucky and got out of there alive and was Medivac back to the "WORLD". I spent three months in the hospital and then served the rest of my service in Fort Lewis, Washington. After that, I went back to ELAC to finish up a couple of classes I needed for State College. I had a friend who was attending Cal State Long Beach University so I decided to go there.
