Shan's Story

Life My life is my family. A group of friends, some happen to be related. Our kids are Juniors in high school with drivers licenses, therefore we are aging rapidly. ;p Where once there were diaper bags, now there are backpacks, suitcases, sports equipment, electronics, cars. The toys they play with now take up room in the garage or under the carport. Schedules are easier now. They travel to events with the school team, we follow in our car. Both kids are taking AP classes this year, so they'll finish college sooner. Debate tournaments take Chey away for 3 days at a time. Johnny Lee's sports now follow the school calendar. Yet our summers are busier than ever. Johnny Lee lettered in athletics last year, Chey in Debate this year. She is at a debate tournament right now, luckily district. Hopefully she will finish in time to begin bracket racing this spring. Johnny Lee is finishing up basketball in play-offs, then will start baseball. Last summer he worked as a life guard, unsure of how this year will finish out. Chey is planning to participate in the Osage Tribal medicine dances again this year, and taking an excellerated summer term for German III. Thankfully, our kids are taking advantage of the opportunities available to them, instead of enjoying just the social aspects of high school. ;p Couldn't be happier they're not following in our footsteps! My Daddy passed away in 2003. I knew I'd fall apart and could not imagine drawing a breathe without him, never knowing that those would be the good days. I took more than 2yrs to believe I could stand alone. For 2yrs I was swallowed in the void of him not being here, then the next yr or so, when I made it out, that void was so huge, pressing against me. Finally, I just miss him with every beat of my heart. I still worship the ground he walked on, but now I am able to follow his lead. The kids do things and I know he's laughing with us. Chey's choices are all in honor of the man that loved her first. In the past 12mo I bought way2much on ebay, so now I am working with a power seller, to remove items no longer used. I am really enjoying Classmates! It has helped my reconnect with long lost friends. Many I really missed and am so thankful to have back in my life. I love the network feature, so when friends update their info, you get notified. I cannot believe my kids are jrs, and will graduate next year. We are so excited that they have been great kids and truly have the world at their feet and can do almost anything. Some people are blessed with one "easy" kid, we got that with both. I know my purpose is to help them grow, they will then help the world. My husband is the most gifted mechanic and supported my choice to get my Cat Ins Adj license, along with my best friend, Don Hendricks (Cooper '82). While I don't wish anything bad on those that live along the coast, and am thankful I had all last year to be with the kids, I would like the opportunity to use my license. No hurracaines last year sucked for business. We plan to send Johnny and Don's GF thru the licensing classes after we have about a year of actual experience. This will be a great way to keep busy after the kids go off to College. If you are reading this and are NOT in my network, please invite me to join yours. I will return the invite. It's hard to keep up with everyone on this site. Surprise! For all of you that remember me going "yard-farming" for cats, and that the number of cat roadkill I saw was an omen for the quality of the day.......I now own a cat. I have also been bitten a scratched enough for all of my cat hating ways. My cat is a Manx. Of the 3 types: rumpy, stumpy and half-tail, mine is a stumpy. She has about a 2"tail. Manx love to play fetch (better than most dogs), and truly are quite different than dogs. Mine is very sweet and will head-butt you for attention. We, of course, have a dog and Chey has a turtle that enjoys having his snout petted. Go figure. School I remember all the changes. At Johnston, the construction of the gazebo, the hill and the brick walkway. The time-capsule was neat when done, and amazing when we returned for the opening. In Junior High the introduction of house bill 72, and our awareness of H.R. Perot. At Abilene High, we all had one normal year, then the Junior Highs became Middle Schools, freshmen came to High school, open campus lunches were gone. Abilene High underwent major construction, and we got a new library, computer wing, and new science labs! It was great to have classes in the new building, and benefit from all the changes. Funniest personal moment: Opting to slide down the banister as the warning bell rang. I was wearing starched wranglers, the banister had just been polished, and everyone had just began running for the door. I was leaning too far in, and sliding way to fast!!! I pushed off the wall just in time to land in the middle of the hallway, notebook exploding, as the people I landed on began to scream!!! When my daughter toured AHS before begining classes this fall, I warned her of the dangerous banister, because she is as graceful as I am. ie: We can trip over our own shadows. I used to go yard-farmin for cats and now I have one! Thanks to classmates I now communicate with former party buddies that grew to become great friends that still allow me the opportunity to ...Expand for more
share in each others lives. How I wish we knew then what we know now! Had a blast, but attending a few more classes would have helped out later. The kids are enjoying HS, indulging in the opportunities, and experiencing life at a normal pace. I am hoping Cooper will plan its 20yr when we have ours, maybe Rodeo Club and the Dixie Riders can play some more 2below tag foot-ball. Just without the kids, some of us feel old enough already. ;p I still smile at all the dances and stuff we all had together. While I know kids from both schools were teaming up before us, our group was special! If you were a member of either group, please email me. I would love to find our scattered members. Maybe we could all plan a get-together during the respective 20s. Most of my happiest memories on campus involved the parking lot, both at AHS and CHS. I still see several of the gang around town, what memories! At the 15, we sang the AHS school song, yet ended up with "We are the Johnston Jaguars". Those are the things that make Abilene home! Friendships that actually span a lifetime! College Going to school in Sweetwater, running in to old friends, working on the yearbook, and TechSun day! Being dropped in the dunking booth 15 out of 15 throws by my friend's baseball playing boyfriend. The basketball tournaments at sister campuses, and sand vollyball on our campus with teams like 2legit, FUBAR, and revenge. VICA trips to leadership conference in San Antonio, State Competition in Harlengen, where I was elected State President, the guy that had ran into the ocean if Feb. in just his "seat cover", wearing a turtleneck and blazer in June, and meeting a life long friend, formerly from Abilene, then and now from Waco, Ken Adkinson. To VICA nationals in Lewisville, KT. We toured the corvette plant, went to Mamoth Caverns, and rode a riverboat, while making more friends from Oklahoma. Those days were great!!! I really miss Jody Gilmore, he was my state vp that year. The two of us, along with one other student, were the only ones that qualified for that trip, so it was a small group. Which meant we got to have a great time. If anyone from the sister campuses read this that were in VICA during this time, contact me! Renee Bynum, Tara Johns, and all those other Techsuns!!! Of course I also attended McMurry and Hardin-Simmons, but I was just out of HS then. Went back after having my daughter, Chey, which made the grades much more important. McMurry had a killer frat back then, IHR. Admission to all of the keggers was the purchase of "x says party", x was the Dean of Instruction. McMurry is where I began designing and making jewelry. That was what actually started my college career. I still have some of the pieces I made. Later when I worked in Jewelry, I realized how much the art classes I had taken at the 2 Universities benefited me. At Hardin-Simmons, I quickly learned how the size of the student body effects your experience in the classroom. At both schools, most of my art classes were taught by a local artist that was truly talented. I wish I had cut my nails shorter while taking pottery classes, most notably those involving the pottery wheel. When I attended the 2 local University, McMurry was still a college and you were allowed to smoke in some of the classes. Hardin-Simmons allowed in all break areas. By the time Chey attended a specialized reading program at ACU, the entire campus was non-smoking. I know the kids are going to love college, and maybe I'll go back after they start. Workplace I worked for Olan Mills for YEARS!!!, through junior and high school, but I got to keep in touch with sooo many people. Best job ever was working as a private investigator, but I couldn't tell anyone, cause Abilene is still a small town. Even filing old cases, I knew 75% of our clients/subjects. I also had the phenominal opportunity to do promotions for a time. I worked with Super Bull, and a few other great projects. I'm currently employed by (pay attention to capitalized letters!) K.E.P.T. as the Manager Of Marketing. (Also know as MOM, and the company "kept". My husband thinks its cute! Military My military experience is strictly that of a dependant. My husband and I are both brats. Luckily, our Dad's had joined because both of us had enough injuries and broken bones to bankrupt the non-military family. My Daddy joined the Air Force in West Virginia, and was stationed both in Florida and San Antonio, Texas prior to being stationed in Louisiana where I was born. The family then lived in Japan for a few years before being stationed here, at Dyess, where he spent 8yrs prior to his retirement. My parents purchased the house I grew up in within days of our arrival, giving me the opportunity to make life-long friendships. I am thankful the Air Force stationed us here, because they stationed my husband's family here also. The few years spent in Japan were great! Being so far from home and extended family caused the squadron to become family. The other military kids were like family, and we were exposed to a different culture that we never would have lived in if not for the military. Two of the families we were closest with in Japan were also stationed in Abilene, and are still close. One was a pallbearer at Daddy's funeral, the other family came in but were more like family.
