Shanion's Story

Hello my name is Shanion Jordon Thurman, I live in Louisville I am a wife and mother of two. I have a daughter in her last year of college and a son that just started the 10th grade. Louisville. It has always been a dream of mine to someday be in the investigative field or an attorney. But life happened along the way and I am just now realizing some of my goals. I currently work in Frankfort for the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the Office of Inspector General for the Cabinet of Health and Family Services. I have recently realized some of my goals from the ¿bucket list¿ that I have created for myself. After 15 years of yo-yo dieting and eating whatever my heart desires, I had decided that enough is enough. I sent in a response to the Today¿s Woman (monthly magazine) call for Today's Woman fitness story. I was pleasantly surprised to be selected but I was grateful for the opportunity. One thing I am learning is to let down my defenses and break the whole diet mentality. I am doing this for my health and wellness. It has always been a battle but now I understand the beast. I was one of the four winners that were selected. I won a personal chef and a personal trainer for four months. Exercise and diet isn¿t a choice...Expand for more
for me anymore, it¿s a must. It¿s part of my daily life, just like showering or brushing my teeth. I am trying to change a lifetime¿s worth of bad habits and this doesn¿t happen overnight. It is important, however, to emphasize that losing weight is not just shedding pounds, it's a whole LIFESTYLE change. Lao-tzu, Chinese philosopher said a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. I began my journey October 1, 2007. I made a covenant ¿ to lose weight, to start exercising and to run the Kentucky Derby Festival Mini-Marathon. I have lost weight (105 lbs) I went from a size 26 to a size 6 and I am committed to exercising and I have completed two mini-marathons. When I first started this journey, I asked God to give me the strength and the power to finish. As much as this has been a physical journey for me, it¿s also been a spiritual one. So in closing, the best advice I have for anyone battling weight and health issues is to take personal responsibility for yourself; Change your eating habits; Build an accountability team; Set reasonable goals; Get a personal trainer; Seek divine intervention; don¿t let a slip keep you down; be your biggest cheerleader and reward yourself by doing something you enjoy!
