Shannon's Story

My life is pretty mundane, when compared to my wild, raucous high school years. I attended De Anza and San Jose State, where I studied Marketing and Bus Administration. I was employed in Sales & Marketing with Pac Tel in San Jose, and then Mt Bell in Tucson, until 1990. I had transferred to Arizona in 1982 to be with the man I thought was the man of my dreams. Good thing I didn't marry him, though, because I met a new guy in Arizona who turned out to be my soul mate. We dated and then lived together for a total of 7+ years, then got married in 1989. After I left Ma Bell, I spent 3 years in Public Relations & Marketing with the American Red Cross Blood Program. I absolutely LOVED my job, but I left in 1992 when I had my first child, Katie. In 1993, after taking many vacations to Hawaii, we decided to live in paradise and moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. We lived in Waikoloa, on the Kohala Coast, for 2 and 1/2 yrs. My husband, Anthony, has his PhD in Optical Sciences, and he designed and developed the adaptive optics system for the W M Keck Telescope on Mauna Kea. My second child, Andrew, was born in Hawaii in 1995. Alas, the price of paradise is very high, both financially and emotionally, and we decided to move back to Arizona to be near family. We've lived in Oro Valley, Az ever since. In 2004, my husband and I started our own company (GEOST, Incorporated) doing research and development in optics systems and sensors. We are still pretty small, with just 15 employees, but most of them have their PhD. We have contracts with Northrup Grumman, General Dynamics, the US Navy, Raytheon, Missle Defense Agency, and a number of other aerospace companies. I like to say that I am the "Director of Acquisitions, Aesthetics, Activities and Altruism" for the company. Roughly translated, that means I am in charge of shopping for stuff we need (including keeping the office kitchen fully stocked with free food and caffeinated beverages to keep our employees happy and energized!), decorating the offices, planning the company parties, and overseeing out charitable contributions. It's a tough job... I am fortunate that I've always been able to stay home with my children. I've been a Girl Scout Leader, PTO Chairperson, classroom volunteer, and phenomenal fund-raiser! I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Blind and Deaf Children's Foundation. My daughter is now 16 1/2 and my son is 14. Our family pets include a very spoiled and somewhat neurotic (rescued) Border Collie, Lucy, and 2 guinea pigs, Popcorn and Shyla. My daughter is visually impaired, but she doesn't let a little thing like being blind stop her. She skis, scuba dives, rides a horse, and played AYSO soccer for 5 yrs. More than anything, though, she loves to read! I know; a weird hobby for a blind child! When she doesn't have her nose literally pressed onto the page of a book, with a 14x lighted magnifier there to help, she has her earphones on and is listening to audiobooks from iTunes. She especially loves science fiction and fantasy novels, as well as anything Manga. Oh, and she loves to do 1,000 piece puzzles; again, with the help of some mega-magnifiers! She gets almost straight A's in school, and is in the gifted and Honors/AP programs at school. She's a member of the National Honor Society, and aspires to go to Harvard and then become a criminal prosecution attorney. Her real gifts, however, are in math and science (She tests in the top 1% nationally.), and I would love to see her pursue something in an engineering field, since that would mean she could go to work at our business. She has a very sweet and gentle spirit, and ...Expand for more
tries to keep a positive attitude, despite having undergone 30+ eye surgeries in the last three years. She and I travel to Ohio on a monthly basis to see specialists there, but so far, the best doctors in the country have been unable to permanently improve her vision beyond 20/2000, even with glasses. 20/200, of course, is legally blind, so she sees about ten times worse than that. Like I said, though, she sure doesn't let it stop her! My son is a pistol; a real character. He keeps us all hopping, and keeps us in stitches as well. He has an extremely sharp and quick wit, and can hold his own against most adults. It can be both a blessing and a curse! He has his black belt in taekwondo, and is on the wrestling team at school. He plays a mean electric guitar, and loves to sing. I don't know where he got the gift of his voice, but he sure can belt out the tunes! He is active in his school's nationally-recognized Show Choir, and is very involved in local youth theater. He has starred as Troy in High School Musical, Jaffar in Aladdin, Perchik in Fiddler on the Roof, Willie Wonka in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and both Gaston and Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast. He is also in the gifted program at school, and is in National Junior Honor Society. He's one of those scary little brain children that had their first chemistry kit at age 4. He's Dexter (from Dexter's Laboratory) crossed with Jim Carey. As I said, both a blessing and a curse! ;-) All in all, they are both good kids and I am blessed to have them. After the antics I pulled in high school, I am surprised both of them aren't total juvenile delinquents! That would seem more like the kind of karma I would deserve, and that the universe would take great pleasure in doling out to me... I do try to make up for my "wild child" days by being the conservative PTO mother type, and by doing a lot of charity work and performing daily random acts of kindness... Sort of like Earl in "My Name is Earl" (What a twisted, hysterically funny show that is! I love it!); I try to create good in the universe to make up for all the bad things I did in my youth... That, plus I don't go to church, and I'm not at all religious, so I figure I have to get into heaven somehow!;-) In addition, I walk 4 miles a day, scrapbook, make jewelry, garden, shop for and decorate my home, do a little hiking, drive my kids all over creation and back, read, and go to the theater and movies. I LOVE to travel, and have been on 6 cruises, including 2 to Alaska, and a 3-week cruise to Italy, the Greek Isles, Turkey and Croatia. My husband, my kids, and I all have our Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver certifications, and we have been diving in Mexico, Hawaii, St Thomas, St Kitts, and Curacao. We go to Puerto Penasco, Mexico a few times a year (a lovely, relaxing time!), and also take family ski trips a couple times a year; most often to Lake Tahoe, Utah, or Whistler, BC. I have a husband who, although he is a workaholic and travels far too often on business, treats me very well, and loves me in spite of all of my neuroses, my insecurities, and my shopaholic tendencies. He makes me laugh every day, and I still love him after almost 20 years of marriage. Who would of thought! (And he paid me very well to write that;-) I am still best friends with Lisa Sharp, and recently renewed my friendship with Cynthia Eggers. So, that's my ENTIRE life in a nutshell. Told you it was pretty mundane. In closing, let me say that, if I had a chance to do it all again, I WOULDN'T! Those pubescent years were bad enough the first time around! Hope that you are all well and happy and that life has been good to you!
