Shannon's Story

Life After graduation I joined many of my M.T. Classmates and headed down the road to UNC for Undergrad. I got on the PreMed Track there but still managed to have a lot of fun, and enjoyed the typical college experience. I stayed at UNC for Med School and then headed on down the road to Duke to do my ENT/Head and Neck Surgery Residency or as I like to call it "5 Years of No Sunlight" I had a great learning experience at Duke, met some wonderful friends while working hard. There was a small smidegon of heaven in residency- when we were stationed at the VA Medical Center in Asheville. There we had time to work AND play! While in Asheville, I got back in touch with my Appalachian Roots ( my momma is a mountain girl ) by taking Mandolin Lessons. I met an entire community of folks who play and appreciate roots music. It was through this group of wonderful folks I met Karl. Network administrator by day and helluva guitar player by night. We commenced a long distance romance as I finished my last year at Duke. It was not a difficult decision on where I wanted to be when I finished training. So on one fateful weekend - my life fell into place with a positive job interview, engagement and oh yes- I also managed to total Karls new 4 Runner in the ice on I 40. I am now partner in Western Carolina Ear Nose and Throat Specialists and have an awesome partner and wonderful group of people who work with us. We serve the population of Haywood County and counties west of us. We have now been married happily for 4 year...Expand for more
s. We reside on The Lazy Dog Ranch 15 minutes west of Asheville in Haywood County. Our "kids" are our Lab- Jessie, Pyrenees - Sonny, Great Dane- Daisy, Cats Cletus and Roscoe, and Ducks Hank and Peggy. Chickens are in the works. Mom just finished her retirement home right next door- it is good to have her close - she is an AWESOME cook and our food comes straight from my organic garden to the table. Karl and I spend our free time Organic Gardening, enjoying the beautiful waters Fly Fishing and Kayaking, Skiing in the winter months and oh yes- pickin and grinnin bluegrass with some of the finest people I have ever met. We are very proud this year to host the 4H garden in our hayfield and hope that more folks will join us in our effort to start a community garden. We have decided not to have children and have been content serving as Aunt Shannon and Uncle Karl to my brother's kids. Ya'll come see us! We have plenty of room and purty views! School High school all seems like such a blur. I know I could not wait to finish and be on my own. I stil keep up with Katherine Yoder ( now Green ) and Tad Byrum. They both have lovely families and really have not changed a bit. I know most my my High School life was consumed with riding and competing in Equestrian events. I still enjoy horses but we don't have any. Ms. Mowbray and Mrs. Milner at Career Center were two of my most memorable teachers. Who could forget Mr Giles? History was always a treat since you never knew what character he was going to portray that day.
