Sharon's Story
Life
I was born in Milwaukee and grew up in Madison, Wisconsin, graduating from West High in 1967. My mother, Esther Gallagher, died in August, 2005. My dad, Sid Gallagher, died in February, 2007. My brother, Richard, and family live in the Milwaukee area. My sister, Kathy, and family live in Green Bay. I earned a bachelor's degree at Colorado State University in 1971 (housing and design), and married Dwight Blackstock, a Presbyterian minister that same year. In 1980 I earned a master's degree in public administration from California State University Los Angeles.
Dwight and I have two sons, Marcus (born 1973 in Viet Nam and adopted by us in 1975) and Steven (born 1976). Marc's behavior has put us on a life-long roller coaster. To date (2007) he has fathered 7 children by 7 different women and has abandoned them all.
Steve has grown up well. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a degree in Political Science in 1998, then entered graduate school and earned a Master of Divinity degree from San Francisco Theological Seminary in 2001. He is now a Presbyterian minister in Belen, New Mexico, married to Beth Carlisle, and a new father to Grace E...Expand for more

My career has been in the private/non-profit and government sectors. I currently work as a records administrator for the City of Lakewood, a suburb of Denver, Colorado. I've done a lot of volunteer work in the Presbyterian Church and currently chair a denominational committee that evaluates candidates for ministry as they complete requirements for ordination.
My husband suffered a degenerative back injury in 1997 (all he did was stand up from a seated position) that resulted in five surgeries over several years. In 2002 he resigned his full-time work and went on disability, continuing to work part-time. He recently decided that continuing pain makes working impossible, even part-time, which is a major disappointment for a guy who feels such a strong call to pastoral ministry. He is doing a little teaching and some volunteer work, but will remain on disability until he officially retires in five years. I feel lucky to have married such a nice guy - he's been a good friend and supportive partner for over 35 years.
I hope to retire in the next 3-5 years and spend time playing with grandchildren, traveling and enjoying some free time.
