Sharon's Story

I am a retired educator from the L.A. Unified School District officially since 2010 due to health issues (was on disability since 4/2006). Presently have 3 homes---2 in southern CA (1 in Santa Clarita, permanent residence & 1 in Malibu Cyn., our get-away). Our 3rd is abroad in the lovely, tranquil area of Lower Slaughter in the picturesque Cotswolds' countryside about 80 miles from London in the UK. Love it! In May of 2003, I was honored in the UK with the title ''Lady" because of my involvement with starting the D.A.R.E. program in the public schools & a mobile library for the inner city schools in the London area. It was quite an honor. Presently, we spend January-May in the UK, while I teach extension courses in poetry writing & Charles Dickens literature for the University of Liverpool. Love it, love it, love it!!! I have lived in southern CA since 8/1973 after graduating from WSU. My younger siblings (5) still live in MI. I was the only one to venture 2500+ miles from home. In 8//2010, I was placed on dialysis due to kidney problems 3x per week. Am doing very well & am pursuing a transplant at the UCLA Med. Ctr. in L.A. area. Feel great & am doing well on dialysis. My education did not stop once I moved out to CA. I continued with a M.S. in education from CSUN (CA State University Northridge). After retiring from the L.A. school system, I worked for 3 years part-time in Santa Clarita at Sylvan Learning Centers close to home as Program Direc...Expand for more
tor until they closed in 10/2011. It was an enjoyable experience & was disappointed when they had to close. However, I still stay busy writing poetry and am in the process of writing a children's book. We have 3 dogs & 1 cat. When I say "we", I'm referring to my ex-husband, Rick. We are still very close, but, with my illness, I did not feel it was fair to keep him tied down to an ill wife. However, our closeness makes everything great. Upon arriving in the L.A. area, I landed a job at 20th Century-Fox Studios in Century City as a production secretary/make-up artist for Spelling-Goldberg Productions, where I remained until 7/1980. After leaving, I began my career in education for the L.A. School District as a teacher, followed by a Reading Coordinator and, then, Vice-Principal until retiring. I do miss it, but am fortunate to still have contact with many students from Beachy Ave. School. Teaching for the University of Liverpool has helped to fill the void, too. I am fortunate to have had the life I've had. I just can't believe that over 45 years have passed since we walked the legendary halls of St. Philip Neri. It seems like only yesterday when Sr. Euphrasia was perched on her favorite spot during the changing of the classes or Mr. Weber was lecturing us in history. Looking back, it brings a smile to one's face. I wish all of St. Philip's alumni continued success and happiness in all of their endeavors. We were and always will be THE RAIDERS!!!
