CLASS OF 1974
North High SchoolClass of 1974

Sharon's Story

I graduated from NHS in 1974. I went on tp get my Associate of Science degree from Bakersfield college. I was involved in anumber of singing groups and led an explorer post in High adventure.I graduated from BC in May 1976. I went to Fresno State where I lived in the Dorms. In Spring 1977 I lost my dad to cancer. I then spent the summer at Lake Sequoia where I met my husband Jeff. We were engaged in Oct.1977 and Got married in Aug 1978. We stayed in Fresno almost 3 years..I only lack an internship to complete my Bachelors degree. We moved back to Bakersfield in July 1981. Jeff eventually got a job with the county and is a Social worker supervisor. I have worked at various jobs and we have two children Janelle and John.We also have two dogs.Riley is our German Shepherd, and Bella is our Rodesian Ridgeback. We have a cat named Moonlight who is a domestic shorthair cross. We attend church and are involved in Bible study and various ministries. I am involved in pet therapy with Riley.I take him to various skilled nursing facilities and retirement communities through the SPCA. When I was 38 I had Hodgkins Lymphoma. I had surgery ,chemo ,and radiation .I have been in remission for almost 15 years. I have participated in many musical productions at Canyon Hills Church and in various choir activities. I continue to raft, camp, fish, garden and read .I used to do a lot of backpacking with my sister and her two children and my two children. We have many wonderful memories of the backpack trips.Unfortunately, while in high school I severely injured my knee and eventually had to have it replaced in 2001. I will always cherish the memories I had of 37 years of backpacking the HighSierra, catching Golden Trout, and the many wonderful people I got know during that time. Our dogs always backpacked with us and they always kept a watchful eye on the four children and let us know if we had any wild animals around. In all that time we never had a problem with bears or people. We have had bear encounters camping ,but never backpacking. I have a friend that I fish with on occassion ,but often I go by myself. I mostly trout fish in the upper Kern River and the eastern Sierra . Every year my sister and I spent four days in the eastern Sierra enjoying the fall colors .It is unbelievably beautiful and there are photographers everywhere. We always take the dogs with us.The nights are often down in the 20"s .We camp in various places in the summer and in the summer our two families plus friends get together for a raft trip down the Upper Kern River as well as a BBQ at Riverside park. We also get together for Christmas and other holidays. I also do volunteer work every week at the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center. I have always volunteered at the school my children were in as well as various ministries within the Church. In 1982 Jeff and I were short term missionaries in Bolivia. It was an eye opening experience for me and we really saw the Lord working .When we came home I realized no matter how poor Americans are they are extremely well off when compared with Bolivia and any other third world country. I am glad I got to spend the time In Bolivia ,it made my understanding ...Expand for more
of missions much greater and I have a much greater appreciation of America and a heart for those in other countries and a better understanding of the Great commisson. My children are a precious gift to us They were born in 1987 .Janelle is ours by adoption and Gods hand was certainly in that miracle. I got to see her birth and hold her first and take her home with in a few hours. John came 3 and a half months later .He was a premie weighing in at 3lb 4 oz and being just 15 inches long.He was taken early to save my life.He also is a gift and a miracle. We lost 8 babies to miscarriage, but the Lord gifted us with two here on earth and eight in heaven! I eagerly await the day that I will see and know them in heaven.!! My husband and I will celebrate our 32nd wedding anniversary in Aug 2010. I have a wonderful and caring husband for which I thank God everyday! He is a man on God .Just recently he had a book published. He sometimes goes camping and we did some backpacking together before I had my knee replaced .As part of his job his does Fair hearings in court. . Jeff is a deep and analytical thinker and does much writing He has written a book called Strengthen the Things that Remains..He coordinates the prayer walk for the church and hopes to return to Bible teaching soon. He is very gifted in that area. We enjoy taking the dogs to the dog park together and I enjoy taking Riley camping as I did with our Great Pyrennes before him and our Lab Husky cross and Our Shepherd lab Cross. Bella is new to us and we are not sure with her wether she can go or not. She gets car sick ! They have all been hardy loving and all around great dogs! My children are both grown now and 23 years old.We lost 8 babies to miscarriage and went into adoption. We learned that we would recieve our daughter at birth as her birth mother had chosen us.I then found out I was pregnant with my son John. But my history of pregnancy was not very good .When I was five months pregnant with our son John., Janelle was born to us. I got to see her birth and hold her first !She was a very healthy baby that the Lord blessed us with .Many of our friends at Church were praying for us and Janelles adoption went without any problems.Three and a half months later John was taken five weeks early by C section as I went into eclampsia of pregnancy. He was very small,3 lbs 4 oz .But other than a weak sucking reflex he was really healthy. After three weeks he came home at 4 lbs 8oz. Janelle went through public school until Jr Hi and then went to Stockdale Christian.John started Christian school in first grade.John was diagnosed with ADHD and a high form of Autism called Aspergers Syndrome. He graduated BHS with a high grade point average even though he had some big challenges. Janelle also graduated BHS a year before John and is working at Target and looking towards vocational school. John is currently looking for work. I am sorry the class of 1974 has not had any class reunions since our 20th reunion. I never got to go but was hoping I would be able to go for the 30th but that never happened. I look to the future with faith that the Lord will take us through whatever comes our way.
