Sharon's Story
After graduation from Jefferson, I went to Barnes Business School, then to work. I also volunteered as a hostess at the Denver USO. There I met an Airman named Bill, and after a couple of years and some coming and going, we were married.
We spent 3 years in Australia, where our son was born, then were moved to Sacramento, CA for 5 years. We went to Terhan, Iran for what was supposed to be 2 years, but were evacuated after only one year, when the Shah of Iran left the country and the government was overthrown.
We returned to Sacramento, where I worked as an accounts payable clerk for several companies.Bill retired from the Air Force, and after a couple false starts landed a position with the Calif. Division of Mines and Geology.
We both retired in 2007, and in the spring of 2008, after 31 years in Sacramento, we moved to Booneville Arkansas, population 4400. Only one real grocery store, and 40 miles to the mall. Quite a change, but a nice, quiet place to settle, and closer to the family in Denver and Kansas.
In the summer of 2005 I had surgery for oral cancer, and 35 radiation treatments in Sacramento. Any more and I would glow in the dark. We thought I had it whipped, but 4 1/2 years later it was back. ...Expand for more
With an excellent surgeon, and a fine hospital in Little Rock (2 1/2 hours from home), the bad stuff was removed, and I also got some of the side effects of the first surgery corrected. They also pulled all my teeth, which had been ruined by the radiation treatments. After recovery, and just in time for Thanksgiving, I started chemotherapy. No more radiation could be tolerated. I had 4 rounds of chemo. Thankfully I surprised the Dr. by tolerating them well. Now, in a few more months they can do something about new teeth.
The future is interesting - in 2 weeks our son Kevin will return from his 2nd deployment to Iraq. He is a Chinook helecopter mechanic with the 1st Cavalry, home station is Fort Hood TX, only about 7 hours drive from here.
I am working toward opening a custom quilting business here at home. It is time to make the hobby pay for itself.
xxx Sorry to say, the lingering aftereffects of radiation treatments for her first round with cancer caught up with her. She had increasing trouble swallowing, and on April 10 2019, she had an unrecoverable choking episode, and we lost her.
She is interred in the Mai family plot at Crown Hill Cemetery, Lakewood. We were married 52 years. xxx Bill Thomson
