Sharon's Story
Life
I was the nerdy salutatorian who never learned to dance or went to movies because my church did not permit such "sins." I married a professor at Evangel College (church liberal arts college) in Springfield, MO, where I received a B.A. in English and Spanish. My M.A. in English is from Southwest Missouri State University. We moved to New Jersey when our children were both under two years of age. I was on the founding faculty and head of the English Department at Passaic County College in Paterson, NJ. I then began work on a Ph.D. After two years of full-time teaching and full-time studying, I spent nine months in India doing my dissertations research on the use of periodic markets to provide government services to the rural populations there. I received my Ph.D. in Economic Geography from Rutgers University.
After I separated from my husband, he took my children and hid them in Bangladesh. The story of my rescue of them from a country where a mother has no rights to her children would have made James Bond feel right at home. This was followed by about six years of keeping the children in a state of seige while my ex tried to grab them back. I kept getting calls from neighbors that he was hiding in my bushes again, and calls taking me out of the classroom to talk to police who were trying to find out about this man who kept coming to the school when there was a court order saying that he could not be there. It only stopped because he married a...Expand for more
woman who would not brook such escapades and the children grew old enough to refuse his attempts. It was during this time that I began work on my J.D. at Rutgers Law School so that I could make more money and pay off my kidnapping-related debts. Those debts amounted to a full year's salary for a full professor.
I graduated from law school, and, for a year, practiced corporate finance law while I was still a full-time professor. The dual jobs helped me get out of debt. After retiring from teaching, I continued to practice law for a number of years, and remarried 23 years ago, this time to a banker.
I "retired" (I am actually on disability) at about 50 because of a post-traumatic stress memory disorder, a result of the years of two jobs, two needy children, repeated re-kidnapping attempts, and financial hardship.
My family is a major part of my life. I have my two children, both professionally successful, living about 90 minutes away, and I have two grandchildren. I still live on the water in NJ, and since my husband retired in 1996, we have enjoyed cruising on our 40-foot boat in the Virginia-to-Rhode Island area in the summers, and then taking the boat down the IntraCoastal Waterway to the Florida Keys, where we lived on it for the winters. Now, we have a second 41-foot boat which stays in the Keys and is our winter home. Obviously, boating is a huge part of our lives, and we are active in the United States Power Squadrons.
