Sharon's Story
I've recently had the most interesting experience. My oldest grandson turned 18 on May 31st; he graduated on June 1st and we had a beautiful backyard party for him on June 29th.
Since I now live in Asheville NC and he lives in Michigan with the rest of my friends and relatives, I told him I'd be unable to attend the BIG party, but I'd be at his birthday celebration and graduation.
As the days passed, I thought it was too important a day to miss and decided to make the 11 hour drive and surprise him for his party extranaganza. I was granted the job of creating a picture board of his life thus far. This task threw me into emotional bliss of reminiscing.
My son was only 19 when he became a father -- just a babe himself. The odds were stacked against him that this would be a trouble free parenting task, but it ended up just that . . . t...Expand for more
rouble free! And, as I pondered the reasons, it was because we all stuck together as a family, which included former wives, former husbands, former in-laws. We truly became a village and my grandson was the beneficiary. And for this, he produced good grades, found wonderful friends, used his money wisely, and returned our love in uncountable ways.
Best of all he was so surprised to see me at the party and shouted, "Grandma, what are YOU doing here? I told him someone had to make his favorite meal -- BBQ'd ribs. His joy was the most wonderful gift.
And when the day was through, I realized that all the people who attended the party and had contact with my grandson, were the direct result of me and my former husband whom I've known and remained friends with for 40 years. We felt like Adam and Eve. I am blessed to know the power of Eve.
