Sharron's Story

Life It's been a busy time since 1964 for all of I'm sure. You probably don't remember but I married shortly before graduation. Well, needless to say that one didn't take. I did have two beautiful sons from the marriage though so it wasn't all bad. After numerous jobs as homemaker, secretary, etc. I decided I could see the handwriting on the wall and knew I better find a job with benefits. Not only did I find a job with benefits but I found the best job in the world. In 1974 I joined the Air Force and became one of the first female law enforcement specialist. Moving right along I was fortunate enough to get promoted each time I tested. I discovered that studying really wasn't as bad as I thought it was. Especially when money was involved. In 1987 I retrained into the First Sergeant field and became the first female first sergeant at Barksdale AFB, La. and one of the first in the Air Force. Not only was it a first for Barksdale I was 'first skirt' over the largest munitions squadron in the Air Force. From there it was on to bigger and better things. During all of this I had met and married my current husband while stationed at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. Upon leaving there we spent three years in stationed in Germany. Love it but work did seem to interfer with our European vacation. From there it was back to the states and Bar...Expand for more
ksdale AFB. We spent three years at Barksdale and then it was back to Germany where I was fortunate enough to the first sergeant of the once more largest Civil Engineering Squadron in the Air Force. We returned to Clovis AFB, New Mexico, in 1991 where I assumed duties as Assistant to the Inspector General. A great job but not my first love. In 1992 my husband retired from the Air Force and then in 1993 we once more headed back to Barksdale where I went back into the first sergeant world. I was there until July 1995 when I retired. I taught school for three years but found that it really wasn't my cup of tea. As a first sergeant I wonder where some of the young troops came from and as a teacher I found out. I had this really strong desire to reach out and touch some of them and they wouldn't let me. So much for the teaching. On a sadder note we lost our youngest son, Michael, in December 1998 in an automobile accident. If any of you have lost a child you know it isn't something you get over. You simply learn to live with it. After teaching I wasn't ready to retire so I went to work for the Veterans Administration. Can't seem to get away from government employment. Anyway I retired from the VA in April and retirement is great. My husband retires from teaching in 2007 and then it's back to 'Bossier' for a real retirement. Sharron Lucy
