Sharyn's Story

Life's road can take you on some twisty paths that you initially never imagined for yourself. I graduated with honors in Accounting and was even offered a job upon graduation, but upon my Parents' wishes, I went onto college to major in Accounting at the Church College of Hawaii in Laie. I was doing well, but was smitten with the desire to preach the Gospel; and served an 18 month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon returning to College, I made an adjustment to my major and graduated in Secretarial Science with an emphasis in Office Management. During my last semester, I was hired to be the Student Body Secretary and upon graduation, was hired to be the Personnel Secretary for the Polynesian Cultural Center; where I met my Husband. I was then asked to transfer to be the Admissions Secretary for Brigham Young University in Hawaii. In the 80's. after being blessed with two (2) boys, we decided to transplant our young family to Samoa so that we could connect with my Husband's roots. All my children were raised there as we lived in both, Samoa and American Samoa. I experience cultural schock as I was transported back almost a whole generation in technology, however, I am eternally grateful for the values the culture had to offer my children and would do the same, again. I was a Teacher in both places and experienced the joy of touching the lives of children and seeing them mak...Expand for more
e improvements in their lives. All of my children graduated with Honors and were able to go on to get a College Degree. In 2001, we decided to leave our newly built home to an adopted Son; a beloved nephew. We ventured back to Hawaii so that my husband and daughter could get better medical treatment. My beloved, husband eventually passed on, but my daughter recovered from Rheumatic Heart Disease. I found work as the Store Manager for the Cackle Fresh Outlet Store, and later as the Textbook Buyer for the Bookstore at the Brigham Young University in Hawaii. My children graduated from BYU and BYU Hawaii, left me, and got married. In 2015, upon word that my daughter was expecting twin boys. She already had two other young children under the age of 4 and we knew that she would NOT fare well with that pregnancy. I decided to sacrifice my career and retire early so that I could help her with her children. I moved to Utah and after a year, found a job as a Para-Professional Teacher helping disadvantaged children to improve in their Reading and Math skills. I first worked at the American Preparatory Academy, then after a few months hopped on at the Mana Academy. Retirement has brought relaxation, peace, and joy as I reflect on the things the Lord has helped me to accomplish and as I associate with my Grandchildren. I continue to look for ways to serve others and am willing to go wherever the Lord leads me.
