Shawn's Story
I left Hyde Park in August of 1984 for boot camp. I entered the navy on AUgust 31, 1984 and headed for Orlando, FL (they used to have a boot camp there). After I finished boot camp, I went to an "A School" where they teach you your specialty, then I headed to Japan to join the crew of the USS Midway (CV-41 and CVW-5). The Midway was also known as the USS Neverdock to her crew. It seemed we would only be in port a few weeks then back out on another cruise. I wanted to see the world and I think I seen most of it in my first 2 years there. We frequented Japan ports, Korea, Hong Kong, Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Hawaii and Australia.
After my tour of duty was up there I transferred to the USS Kittyhawk (CV-63 and CVW-9) and became a member of her crew for the "World Cruise '87") We left port in San Diego and went around the world and pulled into dry dock in Philadelphia, PA. We made the news when a large fire broke out onboard and when one of our fleet was "accidently" attacked by Iraq (The USS Stark) We visited many of the same countries as the Midway, but added a few more along the way, namely Pakistan, Kenya, Italy, Spain, France, Mallorca and a few others I can't think of currently.
After 4 years mostly at sea, I was ready for some shore duty, so I asked for them and got orders to the Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, MD Where I was assigned to the FWATD (Force Warfare Aircraft Test Directorate - Also known as ASW - or Anti-Submarine Warfare). I witnessed a lot of really neat stuff at the time that was classified (like the first Drones shared our warehouse - you know those unmanned planes they fly regularly now?) We had hovercraft and all kinds of neat and sometimes secret stuff. I loved my job there and wanted to stay forever, but then a war broke out and interrupted all my fun.
I started to join a Helicopter squadron in MA, but the war took me to an F-14 squadron down in Oceana, VA (VF-32 Swordsmen). I loved the F-14 Tomcat. It was my favorite plane while I served.
Things weren't always fun though. I made lots of great friends and lost a few too. I myself spent a few months in ICU in the Bethesda Naval Hospital (NNMC Bethesda) in MD and was...Expand for more
in and out of there for almost another two years. I made it though, A little uglier then I went in, but still pretty much in one piece. I was no longer able to serve, so my military career ended a bit early.
My Parents had moved to South Carolina while I was away. Perhaps they were trying to hide from me, but it didn't work. Actually my father told me that there was a lot more work in SC, so I headed to Greenville, SC and worked part-time as I attended College. I worked at a Golf Course there (and got pretty good). I was doing well until a pretty young thing came along. One thing lead to another, she got pregnant and I dropped out of college to get a full time job to support my new family. I got married and things were going well. I worked driving a truck for a flooring company called Orders' Distributing Co. I was there for several years until they closed up. I then went down the road to a small company called National Welders Supply Co. where I made several promotions and transferred to Columbia and the CO2 division, then to Beaufort (I love it there), then again, back to Columbia to join the Cryogenics team as a long distance driver delivering Liquid Nitrogen and Liquid Oxygen. Its an easy job and pays very well. National Welders Supply was bought out by Airgas, so now I work in Columbia for Airgas / National Cryogenics.
Along the way, that pretty young thing I gave up college for, found someone else online and left me and my son to fend for ourselves. He is now 12 and we do pretty well. Last I heard she was living with friends and doing the best she could to keep her feet under her, but I'm good. My son and I enjoy ourselves. I make a good living and we vacation all over the world.
We love to go Deep-Sea fishing, Shark Fishing, fishing of any type really. We like hunting, camping, going to Disney or Mexico or up into the Mountains. We enjoy Dirt track racing (Late models mostly).
Well that's it. That's my boring life in a nut-shell. I would love to get back in touch with old friends and relive some memories and see how much things have stayed the same and how much they have changed.
Thaanks for reading my boring story...................WAKE UP! ! ! 8^)
