Shawn's Story
After high school, people thought I'd become a classical musician. I started my studies at the conservatory at Oberlin College. Following freshmen year, though, I came out to my parents who had moved to Dallas in the meantime. They freaked, and I was cut-off, couldn't return to school, and became homeless in a city I barely knew. I pulled my life together, got back in school, backpacked across Europe for a year, and eventually moved to Boston, where I later graduated from Harvard with an undergraduate degree in comparative religion. In 2007, I received an M.Div. from Harvard Divinity School, was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister at Arlington Street Church in Boston, and moved to Canada to become the 23r...Expand for more
d minister of the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto.
My partner, Bob, and I have been together for ten years. We were married in 2007 in Toronto, and are gearing up to adopt. Bob is a great source of strength in my life, and I am grateful for the life we share.
I look back on high school with mixed emotions. While I valued my friendships, being closted was torturous at times. With some distance, I now see high school as part of the process of individual evolution.
I still play the horn, though I have no desire to do so professionally. Yet, when I attend concerts of the BSO, I get a little nostalgic pang for a path that might have been.
So, that's where life had led to this point.
All the best,
Shawn
