Career Biography of Shawn M. “Smitty” Smith . Shawn “Smitty” Smith is a native Texan and Houstonian. His oil & gas experience spans over 30 years in the gulf coast region both on & offshore. Being the oldest son of a Petroleum Engineering father, Shawn’s love for the oil & gas industry was nurtured by his father’s mechanical engineering genius, designing, developing and testing state of the art down hole logging tools for “Dresser Atlas”. After graduating from high school in 1978’, Shawn’s oil & gas career officially began and he went to work for “Dresser Atlas”, Houston Texas as a “Marine Oilfield Electrician”. In 1979’, he became very interested in Geology as a career field and chose to pursue a job as a Mud logger/Onsite Geologist. From 1979 thru 1982’, he worked both on and offshore for both Down Hole Data, Inc. and Data Log, both Houston Texas firms, training and working as an onsite geologist-mud logger, pore pressure specialist and paleontologist. From 1983’ to 1987, he chose to obtain his degree and attended The University of Texas at Austin, being accepted at both the business school and school for Geological sciences. In the business school he chose to study the Petroleum Land Management disciplines under the guidance of Oil & Gas Attorney & Professor “Keith Carter”. In the Geology Sciences school, He chose to concentrate on Depositional Systems and electric log interpretation of those same systems under the guidance of “Dr. Keith Wagner”. However, the most influential Professor on him was “Dr. Claude R. Hocott in the Petroleum Engineering Department. For most of his career and before becoming a professor, Dr. Hocott worked for Humble Oil Company ( now EXXON/MOBILE) and spent most of his time as a reservoir engineering manager in the “East Texas Woodbine field”. . Dr. Hocott’s stated “ the East Texas Woodbine Sand would ultimately be claimed in the future, as the greatest oil field in the world ever and was convinced new exploitation technology would unlock its true potential to give it that status. Because of Dr. Hocott’s vision and passion for that field, it became Shawn’s passion and vision to unlock that field’s potential thus becoming a lifelong pursuit. After graduation in December of 1987’, He began to work with “Hagen & Miller” Austin Texas, as an oil scout, lease broker, and Rail Road Commission oil & gas records researcher, tracking horizontal well activity in the Austin Chalk formation of South and Central Texas including brokering oil and gas leases for major independents.
