Sheila's Story
My family moved to the Northern Virginia area after Brookley AFB closed in 1963. My father transferred to GSA in D.C, given the other choice of Ogden, UT. I attended Annandale and Loudoun Co. High Schools in VA, and attended college in D.C. I received my A.B.A at Benjamin Franklin University (now part of George Washington University), and went to work for a variable annuity company in McLean and Falls Church, VA. I moved to Hartford, CT when the company was purchased by The AEtna. I met my husband Larry Garstka at AEtna and married late, in 1982. (I kept my maiden name.) We have a son who is a mechanical engineer. He designs micro-valves. We have a young grandson and granddaughter. I went to night school at the University of Hartford and eventually obtained my B.S. and M.S.P.A in 1983. I also obtained a SECO Series 6 license and was an SEC securities accountant, accounting systems designer, and financial accounting department director for AEtna. After 22 years, I left to form my own LLC. I spent a year+ working with forensic accountants, while managing potentially criminal staff for the bankruptcy trustee in an infamous Northeast bankruptcy ponzi scheme. We had federal marshals guarding staff on an unmarked floor of a building! I performed some crisis management consulting after that experience. I began working for Science Park Development Corporation in New Haven, CT after a search committee sought me for my experience in crisis management. 18 years as Controller and Executive Director. Our Board had members representing the Governor of CT, Mayor of New Haven, Olin Corporation, Yale, and the adjacent neighborhoods. It was very interesting watching how government works and doesn't work! I retired in 2014. Over the years, my husband and I have lived in various towns up and down the CT river valley, and downsized in 2013 to a classic 1962 ranch that we renovated, in Middletown. (Having a home with a circular driveway would have been a dream for this kid from Topeka, Kansas.) I love travel, and with or without my reluctant-traveler husband, I've seen much of Europe, North America, Mexico, some of South America and the Caribbean, Egypt, and Turkey. I am also a genealogist for my extended family, and spend most of my free time doing research on the internet with various individuals and groups, and managing the Peyton Society of Virginia genealogy website. My mother's maiden name was Peyton; descended from the Gloucester Co., VA Peytons. I especially love DNA research-it is just so fascinating! My Peyton's are no relation to the Peyton's of Loudoun Co., where we once lived. The haplogroups aren't the same. I found my paternal 2nd cousins on a trip to Rovia, Greece in 2016. Prior to COVID, I was planning on traveling to Sweden to visit ancestral family sites there. My Swedish 9th gr-grandfather was kidnapped while studying in London, and sold as an indentured servant to the Virginia tobacco fields. He eventually escaped, and made his way to Philadelphia, and is buried in Old Swedes Church. I love history, and genealogy and travel is a way of living it in detail!
