Sheila's Story

I remained in Colorado Springs after graduation working at Fort Carson Army Hospital in the Radiology/Cardiology & Pediatric Departments doing medical transcription. In 1969 I became a Flight Attendant for Western Airlines, living in Salt Lake City as my first base. Worked flights to San Francisco, Canada, Mexico and Minneapolis till I transferred into Denver. Remained here flying Honolulu flights till my departure to get married in 1972. Married a Funny Car driver from Denver that conveniently forgot he was married to me, more often than not, so we divorced 2 years later with no children. During that time I was invited on a Polar Bear hunt as an observer, in a very remote part of Alaska by the Siberian Coast and Russian garrison. Saw numerous wild animals and made many friends in the small village of 250 Eskimos. Was worth the trip as the people are the most amazing society I have ever met. Married Jerry in 1975 in Kauai Hawaii in a beautiful island ceremony. We will be celebrating our 43rd wedding anniversary this coming summer. Time sure does fly. He keeps us laughing on a regular basis which is good for ones health and soul. Worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Denver as an Executive Secretary to the HR Department. Loved this job, as part of my job description was to burn the money ~ every woman's dream and nobody complained. giggle Left there in 1978, to work at Lockheed Martin in the Budget and Manpower Division (I see a common denominator here ~ money). Discovered I was expecting our first child, went on maternity leave and decided being a stay at home mom was for me. Jeremie was born on Jerry's birthday, so now 38 years later they share a lot of great firsts and memories. 15 months later became unexpectedly pregnant, having a beautiful daughter in 1982. They are both a great source of pride and joy, as every parent would agree. By this time in our life we had our own product design business, so I occasionally worked in the office when needed. One of our first inventions came from a well remembered trip to the Opry Land Hotel in Nashville where I put Jerry in charge of the children while I gathered their clothes from the pool area and he lost them! REALLY!! Once everyone was reunited we brainstormed on the way home on how to alleviate such a traumatic experience for other families. We launched our first product approximately 6 months later and now have an accumulation of 50+ patents ranging in products from A - Z. We have traveled with friends to Hawaii, Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta, Kentucky and Texas. In 1999 we experienced the unthinkable ~ the Columbine shootings. Both kids were there. Lacey called immediately to let me know she was safe, however Jeremie was missing. After hours of waiting and searching he was found safe, however, his friends were not so lucky. He proclaimed to me upon our reunion and my concern regarding his running abilities, that "He hauled A-- that day and was attending church that evening." Always a sense of humor in the face of despair. Lacey had been in the library with Cassie Bernall working on a project when Lacey decided to leave for lunch, leaving Cassie alone. Lacey mourns her friend to this day. A horrible experience no child or parent should have to endure. In 2003 we lost my dad to Pulmonary Fibrosis. I miss that man so very much. His permanent place of rest is For...Expand for more
t Logan Memorial Cemetery, 7 minutes from our house, so there are frequent visits and chats. Mom still lives in Texas and will soon be a healthy 98. She lives independently, keeps her sense of humor and loves being ornery on occasion. Around the time Lacey turned 9 she became enamored with horses. We started with one, then of course he needed a friend, then they needed a way to get to the shows and of course a truck to pull a trailer with and this story goes on and on with many ribbons (that cost how much?), 5 horses later and many many wonderful memories as well as tears. With Lacey's encouragement I took up competitive Dressage, so we could show together as mother and daughter. We had many successful years and wonderful memories of our competition days. We lost my special competition mare in 08, then Lacey's competition gelding last year. We are down to 1 horse which is Lacey's husbands(Dave is a police officer/SWAT/hostage negotiator in Castle Rock) Morgan that failed Police Horse School, so he now enjoys being a pasture ornament. I am blessed with riding and spoiling other peoples horses, as well as being gifted a special mare that is the perfect image of Mollybrown. Lacey graduated from D.U. as a Spanish Teacher, but with all the politics and budget cuts is questioning her choice. She passed up law school but is rethinking that one as of late. Lacey is also a Spanish translator for the Colorado State patrol, any of the police entities and courts that require her talents. She is also an Animal Communicator as well as working/studying with one of the top communicators in the world. How blessed she is. Jeremie attended ACC for a period of time, but the teachers had him teaching the class, so he decided to go out on his own. Jeremie is quite the technological GO TO guy in the family and keeps us up and running when needed. He's very good at pointing out all the new technological breakthroughs that Jerry can't live without. He and his girlfriend gave us a beautiful granddaughter Dec. 2 of 2011, that is not only beautiful but amazingly smart. I love spoiling her, teaching her funny and harmless things she shouldn't do, then sending her home and watch the reaction from a distance. I have a naughty sense of humor. We are finally at the age for social security, so have scaled back a bit and enjoy sleeping late, having breakfast with our 2 Jack Russells (one is a terrier-ist), doing hot rod runs in the summer and backyard barbeques. I hope to be able to reconnect with friends from school and do some reminiscing over beverages, be it adult or otherwise and maybe an occasional picnic or get together. The year of 2021 was not a good one for the Smith family. Jerry and I became ill with covid at Thanksgiving with both of us requiring to be hospitalized. 2.5 weeks later I was released, still carrying oxygen around, barely making it from one room to the next. On December 19, Jerry passed away after being on the ventilator and in the ICU from day 1 of admission. Navigating life without your spouse of 48 years is quite the challenge. It certainly was a club I had no intention of joining. Covid has changed not only our world, but the entire universe in such a strange way. It's as if we went to sleep and woke up in a different world. Glad we have the memories of the 60's and 70's that we were so blessed to grow up in and be a part of.
