Sheila's Story
Workplace
I teach visual arts at a municipal arts centre, and also do administrative support work. Currently I'm teaching 4-6 year olds, but I've taught all ages at one time or another. I do 2D and 3D media with the students, typically drawing, painting, collage, clay sculpture, recycled materials, wood, fabric, whatever we can get our hands on. I love that moment when a student says, "look! I just made green with blue and yellow!" My administrative work is in the adult visual and ceramic arts area: program planning, preparing sessional schedules, attending to instructor's needs such as classroom set-up, time sheets, supplies, equipment. There is no chance of boredom with this job -- something different every day, every hour, even! Though I do some work at my desk, often I'm out roaming the building, checking classes, installing art exhibits, unlocking doors and cupboards, helping with inventory in the art store, and a myriad of other tasks too numerous to mention. It's a great job, utilizing my arts skills and education, helping to deliver art education to the public within the municipal recreation and cultural services department.

from my job in March of 2022 and am enjoying my free time, and seem busier than ever. I'm doing my own art work, drawing, painting, collage and sculpture with found objects. I take snapshots but don't call myself a photographer! Nature study occupies much of my day, taking walks/hikes in the forest, bird and bear-watching, and feeding birds on my deck. I had two long-term relationships, no children but lots of friends. I live in the Vancouver, BC area near the forest and mountains. My interests and hobbies include reading, writing, art galleries and museums, astronomy, organic gardening on my small deck, keeping up with world news, environmental issues and politics, and visiting friends. I was a mountaineer in my youth, enjoyed backpacking, camping, paddling, X-C skiing, fishing, snowshoeing and archery. A few health issues have slowed me down and I no longer do tent-camping, but I look forward to road trips, and travel beyond North America when the time is right. I am very concerned about climate change and world events. I am fortunate to live in my region, and know that I am privileged in many ways while so many people struggle to cope with war, poverty and racial and economic injustice. I support several non-profit organizations in hopes of alleviating the suffering of others. I wish everyone well as we make this journey of life.
