Sheila's Story

Life I am married. I have two children. My first born is Katrina in 1999. My second (and last) born is Jacob in 2002. I worked some retail in high school and a couple of years after, but the bulk of my work years was spent at two police departments (not as an officer). I also graduated with an AA from Diablo Valley College and a BA from CSU, Sacramento. I left school to have my two children and never went back. I spend most of my time shuffling my daughter around to her activities (school, cheerleading...) or taking care of my 3 year old son and my niece. My 3 year old niece lives with me full-time. I don't really have free time. April 19, 2005--My mom was diagnosed with colon cancer on March 8, 2005 and had surgery on March 17, 2005. The cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and due to surgery complications, she required a temporary colostomy bag. The colostomy bag caused weight loss complications, so the doctors decided that she needed to have the bag removed as soon as she was healed enough. For this reason, they put off chemo until after a second surgery (May 24, 2005). Now her chemo will begin in June. The doctors spoke of how important it was for her to begin chemo within 2 weeks of the original surgery, and now it is going to begin nearly 3 months after the original surgery. I am not a doctor, but it seems to me that this is diminishing the 30% chance of survival that she has been given. May 25, 2005--My best friend's mother was diagnosed with breast cancer on April 14, 2005. She passed away on May 15, 2005. I still can't believe she is gone. My children don't know exactly why my mom is sick, but the mother of one of my daughter's classmates died last week and her teacher announced it to the class on my birthday. My children already went through the death of 2 pets in the last 2 years. This is going to be really hard on them and even harder on me watching them go through it. On a happy note, we just had my daughter's school carnival on May 20, 2005. After 4 months of preparations, we raised nearly $45,000!! They will get their computer lab! June 30, 2005--Well, my mom started chemo on June 28,2005. She spent that day getting sick. She is doing better today(June 30). We are going to Hawaii in July.....we all need a vacation!! School I read through the list of classmates and I rec...Expand for more
ognize a lot of names, but without a face, it is hard to remember why I know the names. I took independent study my senior year so I could work full time and pay for my apartment and car insurance. I technically graduated in 12/88, but I got to walk with my class in June 89. My junior year, I had work experience, so I got out at noon. I guess I didn't spend much time actually at the high school. I was in a serious relationship with someone three years older than me for four years (all through high school) so I wasn't into the dating scene either. I was so busy working and living my life that I missed most of the high school type stuff. I didn't go to the prom. I would love to hear from anybody who remembers me even though I was hardly there. College I graduated from Diablo Valley College in 1995 with an AA. I then graduated from CSU, Sacramento with a BA in Psychology and a minor certificate in Child Development. I then completed one year of the Masters program at CSUS in Psychology, but had to take a leave of absence to have my daughter. I haven't been back. I am an inactive alumni member of Alpha Gamma Sigma. I may go back to school after my son starts school, but that won't be for a few more years....we will see! Workplace I worked in retail management(Millers Outpost, Wilsons House of Suede and Leather) for several years. Then I wore a uniform for the Contra Costa Community College District Police Department and then for the Concord Police Department. I quit working when I got pregnant in 1998. Well, I quit working out of the home anyway....but my kids are still a full time job! I just found out that someone that I worked with at CCCCDPD committed suicide last week (April 2005). I took up writing about a year ago. I have completed 2 manuscripts and I am working on 2 more. My writing has been put on the back burner for the last couple of months because of all the bad things that have been happening (see Life Bio for brief summary of two of the bad things). I think when I get time to write some more, I may write a book about what has happened in my life. With the long list of tragedies/crisis this year, people tend to laugh when they hear the events just from the last 2 months....not that it is funny, but just incomprehensible that so many bad things could happen in and around one person.
