Shelley's Story

Life Prior to attending PCPA (Phila. college of Performing Arts) on a full scholarship, I spent my freshman yr. at Temple U. on a partial scholarship. Due to a serious dance accident in 1987, I was paralyzed for almost 2 yrs. and, due to the extent of my injuries, I deveoped a very rare neurological condition called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy. It's a condition that attacts all the involuntary organs of your body while causing CONSTANT unbearable pain. I started working w/ the Phila. Civic Ballet Co. as the asst. to the director in a fund raising position, but in 1994 I made my debut as a disabled dancer. Wearing hip-to-toe leg braces I created my own "free-form" style of dance and it's debut was at the Annenberg Theater during the dance co's. 40th anniversary gala. I've been doing telethons (mostly out of the country) since then, but recently that work has dried up. I'm currently writing an outline for a screenplay and am searching for a screenwriter to help me develop it. I'm hoping to use some of the contacts that I've made w/ famous people that I've met while doing these telethons to get the movie produced. Everyone cross your fingers for me!! In the meantime I'm still developing/adding on to the current outline and have every intention of being an intrigal part of the actual production of the movie. That is why I chose to write a screenplay instead of an autobiography. Anyone out there who is in the business, please feel free to help me out in any way possible. Trust me, it's ...Expand for more
for a very good cause and it's a very inspirational story which, in this day and age, is definitely needed! I'm currently taking ALOT of meds. and I get surgical procedures done every 4 months to try and control the worst of the pain. I'm also having my leg braces reconstructed to make them more "dancer friendly". In the meantime I'm trying my hardest to stay in the best possible physical condition. I would like to start my own school for disabled dancers instead of just working w/ the Variety Club kids. I'm hoping that beginning the production of the film will allow me to do that. I would also DEARLY love to adopt a child (at least 1)and, because I'm on permanent dis- ability, they aren't too keen on allowing us to adopt due to the lack of income. I'm hoping that the movie will allow me to do that, as well. I also seriously need to make RSD (my condition) more public...especially to drs.; yet ANOTHER reason for this movie. So it's important for me to let people know that I'm not just in it to makes lots of money. The money will assist me to live more comfortably as the condition continues to progress, but it's not my first priority for having this movie made. There are many important issues encompassed in this story...the most of which is that you can lose everything and find a way to rebuild your life. In my case, not only to help myself, but to help as many disabled children as I've been able to in the past yrs. either by dancing WITH them or doing the telethons to raise money FOR them.
