Shelley's Story

My family lived on Decatur Island, part of the San Juans off the coast of Washington State, my first three years. My great-grandparents homesteaded there in 1867, after leaving Wrangell, AK and Victoria, BC. My family moved to Anacortes and then Seattle, WA, moving to Portland in 1967. Art, gymnastics, dance, music and reading were my interests growing up. In 1973 I graduated from Parkrose, where I was part of the art and drama crowd. That summer my sister, Lynne, and I worked in Switzerland and visited family in Sweden. In college I studied graphic design, fine art and communication, went to work full-time and eventually graduated from Marylhurst University in 1986. Whitewater kayaking, downhill skiing and sailing were my hobbies during and after college. Later, a Yugoslavian (as it was at the time) neighbor introduced me to mushroom hunting. I worked as a graphic designer and/or communications manager for over 20 years. My most interesting (and stressful!) job was as director of shareholder relations for an Alaska Native corporation—a mix of Tlingits, Haidas, Tsimshians, Athabascans and Inuits—of which I'm a member through my dad's side of the family. After trying for years to find more information about my great-grandmother, Tahce, her uncle, Chief Shakesh V (Shakes V), and their village of Wrangell, AK, I discovered that Wrangell was bombarded, over a legal dispute, by the US Navy on Christmas Eve and again on Christmas morning, 1869. The villagers left with what little they could salvage, and many of them starved that winter. Wrangell didn't come together again for years. I served a two-year term as co-treasurer of the PTC at my son's high school, and last year was treasurer of the Class of 2016's fundraising for graduation. Three years ago I received my first teaching certificate in ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arranging. My second certificate arrived in May, 2016 and was presented to me by my sensei (teacher) of 12 years, Hideko Hearn. She's a wonderful woman whose husband was a great-nephew of Lafcadio Hearn (often credited with opening Japan to the West). Ikebana is a chance to be creative and acts as meditation for me. So far, I've taken part in a number of exhibitions at the Japanese Garden, the Art Museum and the Geezer Gallery in the Pearl District (artists 60 and over), all in Portland. in May, 2016, my classmate, Megan, and I did a combination of lessons and demonstrations for Portland State University's (PSU's) Japanese Culture Festival. For the Sogetsu Chapter's 2016 Rose Festival Exhibit, "Wild & Crazy," we'll be setting up at the Oregon Historical Society the weekend of June 5-6.The Sogetsu School has the fewest rules of any of the ikebana schools, which appeals to the artist in me. In 1984, Allan E. Ingram and I married. He's an engineer who takes great pride in being an atypical engineer. His family came to Oregon from Arkansas in 1852, and eventually h...Expand for more
omesteaded Ingram Island near Corvallis. Al's interests are energy conservation, wind and solar energy, the wine industry, basketball (which he played in school), politics and the arts. Al and I have one son, Alexander (Alex), a university sophomore. (We're kinda fond of him.) He's studying pre-engineering at university and wants to sign up for the Global Formula Racing (GFR) Club. Alex inherited his dad's interests in science and math, and mine in art and language. He speaks fluent French, basic Mandarin Chinese and some Spanish. He gleefully claims he's able to swear in six languages: English, French, Mandarin, Spanish (thanks, Tomas), German (thanks, Henry) and Korean. Four years ago, Alex earned his 3rd degree black belt in taekwondo. As a kid, he talked his dad into joining him, and Al tested for his 3rd degree black belt a year after Alex did. In 2010, we traveled to Beijing, China and Seoul, South Korea with the taekwondo masters and several other students and their families. We saw the usual sights, including the highlight of the trip for me, an underground rail car and walking (stumbling half bent over) tour of one of the DMZ tunnels. The students got to work out at the Sports University in Seoul with the Samsung National Team. The South Korean Army Team was working out at the same time, and they are truly scary. Every soldier in the South Korean services knows taekwondo. Kim Jong Un better watch it. The last stop was a visit to world taekwondo headquarters to watch Olympic hopefuls work out. We currently live in Beaverton, OR. We have one feisty tabby cat, Digby. Over the past 4 years, our beloved cats, Mathes-the-Gray and Wizard (Big Squeak), and beloved golden retriever, Crosby, had to be put to sleep. *sigh* For those of you who knew my sister, Lynne Johansen, '72, she's living in northwestern Washington with her significant other, Dan, and their large part-wolf dog, Comet. Lynne runs her own yard maintenance and house cleaning business. She's still a kind and warm-hearted person who loves family, children, animals, folk-dancing and nature. She's a woman of many friends, of all ages and backgrounds. For those of you who knew my mother, Elsie Johansen, she continued her habits of hard work, volunteerism, lifelong learning and observing the world with a generous, humorous and sometimes satirical eye. She worked until she was in her 70s and retired reluctantly. At 75, she decided that she wanted to know more about our Swedish relatives and family history, so she hired a tutor and spent six months learning the language. That summer she traveled to Sweden, visiting relatives, introducing those who didn't already know each other and researching genealogical records. She died in 1996, after a brave 3-year fight against cancer. Her attitude toward dying was an inspiration to me, and to friends and relatives. We helped her, and she helped us accept that she would be leaving us.
