Shelley's Story
I was not one of the in crowd and I was very shy especially with those I did not know well. I was just entering Glendale Jr. College when my father decided to start his own business in Albuquerque. I finished the semester living with my grandmother and then transferred to the University of New Mexico. I graduated with a BS in elementary education and worked for the Albuquerque Public Schools for 25 years. After the 1993-4 school year, the school I was working in was going to start their own district and I did not want to work for them. I had enough years in to get full retirement, my car was paid off and I had a house set up and paid for on the property my parents owned in rural Oklahoma, so I decided to retire. I'm glad I did because it gave me nearly 5 months of quality time with my father who died near the end of October that year. Although I had always been proud of my authoritarian father I was also a bit afraid of him. My relationship with him improved as I became an adult and was more independent, but it wasn't until I spent those last months with him that I really understood what a kind, helpful, generous person he was. After his death I helped Mother take care of the property, building her the garden pond she had always wanted, mowing, clearing snow etc. and we did many church activi...Expand for more
ties together and became very close. She died Aug. 3, 2012, two weeks before her 92nd birthday. I had been in two performing clogging groups and was a member of a square dance club in Albuquerque, so I joined groups in Oklahoma and am still clogging. Unfortunately my square dance club and my clogging group ended up on the same night and I had to choose between them. I am also a member of two quilt guilds, although I am only really active in the local Pryor guild, an active member of the First Church of God, teaching the 1st - 3rd grade sunday school class and wed. night group, singing in the choir, I am the secretary for the Board of Christian Education and work with the prayer shawl group who knit or crochet prayer shawls, and help with the quilt connections group. We have a very active seniors group and I participate in many of their activities and shorter trips. Longer trips are more difficult because I also take care of many of the animals that are dumped in the country. I have 1 dog and 14 cats that I am currently taking care of. This includes food, shelter, shots, neutering and some time spent just petting. Some of them can be fed by neighbors when I am gone, but others need to be boarded with the vet, so a trip of any length can get very expensive on my limited income. I feel blessed.
