Shelly's Story

I am now at home full time, caring for my husband who has ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease.) ALS is a terminal disease with no cure but with medical interventions and equipment we hope to stay together for a long time to come and enjoy our time together. He is on service-connected disability from the military (served in OIF) and I was "downsized" from my IT job at exactly the perfect time. They are changing over software systems and centralizing everything to run from Missouri. I worked in the IT department at the hospital here for 16.5 years. I also taught college English at the local community college as an adjunct instructor in the evenings (while working at my IT job) until my husband's diagnosis. We are now free to travel and spend all of our time together, which we have wanted to do since we got married 17 years ago. We can visit my family in Texas, our grandkids in California, take trips without having to schedule time off from work. Our grandbaby girl - not a baby anymore but a big girl of six - came with her mom (our daughter-in-law) to visit us for awhile this summer. It was great! They were here for July ...Expand for more
4th. We had a houseful that day. We surprised Eddie by flying his son in for July 4th weekend too since he happened to get that weekend off. Now we are planning another trip to California to see them and the rest of the grandkids. We raise chickens and peacocks. The peacocks are sometimes a pain in the ass. They are little escape artists and then have to be lured back to their pen. They are fun to watch though. They are still not fully grown and are very curious. When they are out of their pen they like to follow our dog around. They are also curious about the rabbits that live around here. Sometimes they will get on the roof and look in on us through the skylight over our kitchen. After seeing the movie "Up" we named them all Kevin. That's only funny if you have seen the movie. The chickens aren't much of a problem except for keeping them safe from predators. Had a raccoon problem for awhile but that has been remedied. With aides, delivery people, service people, friends, and relatives it seems like Grand Central Station around here sometimes. The rest of the time we enjoy the quiet of living in the country.
