Sherri's Story

DEC 2012 UPDATE: For those of you who may have known me and my family - an update 37 years later...Dad is 89 and getting a tiny bit of dementia, but otherwise no health issues. He still drives and runs from all the little old single widow ladies around town that are looking for husbands! Randy and Sally (Casey) have 4 married children and six grandchildren. Randy is big into hunting and outdoors, and has built himself a log cabin by hand, on some land he owns. He also has a couple horses. Vickie is married and has 2 kids who are both married, and 1 grandson. She raises horses and sheep. I have two sons, Brad, 29, who is single, lives in Juneau Alaska, and builds log cabins. (Update....home in KS now....)Jason (32) is married to Athena and they have a baby girl Kaia, my 1st grandchild. They live and work on Long Island in New York. I live in SE Kansas, within an hours drive of Randy, Vickie, and Dad. I live in a cabin with a beautiful view, we raise cows, and have the usual pets, a dog and some barn cats. My hobbies are writing, playing my guitar, music, reading, and anything outdoors: hiking, fishing, camping...I like all kinds of music....We have lots of musicians in the family that play country, bluegrass, and other misc. stuff. I would really enjoy reading your stories too! 2012 UPDATE: We built a small cabin for my dad just a short walk from ours a year ago last Nov. He is 91 now and his dementia has progressed to where he needs someone to look out for him. He is on meds. now and is doing very well....no driving anymore. I go over twice a day to check on him and visit. I take his meds. to him. He still has an excellent long term memory and no other health issues. But....he may forget 5 minutes ago. Jason is still on Long Island....just the one grandaughter Kaia. Brad is still single....very outdoorsy.....a carpenter by trade and (update Mar. 2012) headed back to Juneau, Alaska in April. Alaska is in his blood....and I don't blame him, but I'm missing him already and he hasn't even left yet. When I visited there I didn't want to come home. It is beautiful there! Mountains, ocean, whales, fishing, hiking.....it doesn't get much better than that! Oh, and lots of log cabns! No cows these days. I had to quit my job with the Health Dept. when dad came here a year ago. Randy and Sal are doing great...he's retired and Sally will retire in March. (Update....talked to Sal last night and she is officially reitred!) Vickie has just the one grandchild ....Ridge who is 7 now. She still has a sheep or two and makes and sells homemade soap...fantastic soap by the way....all natural ingrediants. I read a lot, sew some, take lots of pictures, try to see some of my classmates when I can. The class reunion was great....SO good to see everyone!! The rest of the family is doing great. Babies are coming and the family is growing: grandkids for Randy and Sal, Great-grandkids for Dad. Dad was 92 in June. In just the last two months I see his dementia getting worse. He is getting his days and nights mixed up. His short term memory is getting worse. After the 1st of the year Randy and Vickie and I will have to talk about what to do. I am confident sometime in the next couple months dad will probably have to go to a nursing home. I'm doing everything I can to keep him out, but it's looking like soon he will need 24/7 care. He refuses a hearing aid or help with walking and he's getting unsteady on his feet. I feel sorry for him. I've decided I don't want to live to be 100 after all. November 2015: I don't get on here often. I was reading earlier posts and realized I haven't updated since 2012. Not sure if anyone reads this but just realized I have sort of a diary going here that I can keep. It's interesting to read previous posts and remember what was going on at the time. Dad is 95 and is in Assisted Living. He's like the energizer bunny....always seems to recover quickly. Has had pneumonia twice, fallen a couple times, but none of that for a year now. He's very pleasant to be around most of the time. I think having the company of others and being in some activities has been good for him, although he would probably prefer to be home. I still bring him home one night a week. He stays in the little cabin behind and I have a camera on him and then go over and check on him several times during the night. As long as he doesn't fall I'll keep that up. He knows everyone, but still gets confused. Yesterday he told me he use to play for the Kansas City Chiefs! ha I just said, "Oh really? Well that's awesome!" and chuckled to myself. There are some crossed wires of course because he actually did play football for Parson Jr. College, and one other college he attended. Can't recall. Everyone else in the family is doing great. Randy has 12 grandkids. Vickie and I each have one. I'd like more...but out of my hands. Still time I guess - both sons still far away: one still in NY and the other in Juneau, Alaska. Thank goodness for Skype. If I had my way I'd be living in Alaska...love it there. No cows these days. Going to try my hand at pumpkins next fall......dug up a 20x30 patch of dirt down by road. Just an experiment....lots of deer here so will probably be fighting that. Turned 62 and started Social Security. Bought a little junky camper last fa...Expand for more
ll and fixed it up, painted etc and took it camping 3 times this fall: to a Blue Grass Festival in Mo, then Vickie and I met at Farlington for 8 days. I enjoyed it so much I went back a couple weeks later by myself for 3 nights. Beautiful fall weather and the lake was so pretty...lots of hiking trails - some right behind my camper so I did a little hiking. The deer are plentiful there and seem to have no fear since no one bothers them. However, I kept my eye out while hiking. I'd like to go back one more time even tho' it's getting colder. That doesn't bother me as I have a heater in the camper and enjoy sitting around the fire outside. I don't mind going alone....but I did have fun with Vickie and we had some family come and join us around the fire for her birthday one evening. No other news in the family that I can think of. I enjoyed seeing Nancy Lett, Judy Lindquist, Sandy Dawson (not married names) Debbie Lock, RuthAnn Caldwell, and a few others in Sept. at Artist Alley. Didn't see too many other classmates which would have been nice. Oh yeah, visited with Jerry Hughes and Marty. A year from now will be our 45th class reunion....looking forward to that! UPDATE: February 2021 A lot has changed since I wrote last. I don't know if anyone reads this, but I"m glad I started it as I can now look back and remember things I may have forgotten. This entire past year has been a little crazy - with Covid 19 and having to wear masks and isolate - and a Presidential election which was just about as crazy. Donnie came home off the road in September so I didn't spend the entire year isolating. But I had no problem doing it as I've always been able to enjoy being alone. Books and music are my best friends during isolation. I have visited a few family members that were also isolating so we were comfortable being together. Covid didn't stop me from going camping at Farlington, or camping in Chanute with friends. I discovered that if you go to a movie on a Tuesday night in Fort Scott the theatre is usually empty. I love that because I can get my "kiddy" popcorn, put my feet up on the chair in front of me and enjoy the movie without worrying about people not masking up. :-) Also - there's no one to tell me to take my feet down - like Ray use to do at the movies in Chanute! FAMILY UPDATES: Randy and Sal now have 17 grandkids. Vickie has one. I went to Juneau, Alaska for Brad's outdoor wedding 2 years ago in September, and then went again this September for the home birth of he and Dez's baby girl - Aurora (named after the Northern Lights). It was Brad's first, and he has a step-son Miezen as well who is an awesome kid. So, I technically now have 3 grandkids: Miezen and Jason's Kaia are both 12. We did a lot of hiking and sight seeing in Juneau and it was hard to come home as always. Kansas has some natural beauty, but there is nothing like Alaska. I had to take a Covid test coming and going and got stuck in the airport for 12 hours one night. It was freezing cold but the mask kept my face warm. Jason is still living in NY and doing well. Sadly, dad passed away on Christmas Eve 4 years ago. I was with him when he passed. He was 96. I took care of him here for almost 5 years, the last year of that was part time. Then he spent a full year at Assisted Living in Fort Scott. I miss him everyday and am thankful I had all those years with him here. I think this summer I'll put the guest cabin on RB&B. Next year is our 50th class reunion. It's hard to believe. I don't feel my age at all - well - for sure I don't act it! Best bud Debbie (Lock) and I talk about that and how we hope we don't ever start acting like old people, at least until we're too old to care. We are planning to take our campers to Artist Alley weekend/Class Reunion in September. Hopefully it will be in full swing this year after having been cancelled last year due to Covid. Regardless, we will be camping along with some other Chanute classmates who also bring their campers. I don't know if any classmates read this but if so, when not involved in class activities, come out to the Safari campground. We have a lot of fun! September 19, 2021 50th reunion is next week and unfortunately I won't be attending. That was the plan and I was excited about camping with friends and attending the activities, but through a mix up on plane tickets I'll be in Alaska instead. My nephew bought tickets for both of us and I gave him the dates I couldn't go because of the reunion. He bought tickets that cannot be cancelled or exchanged and put in the wrong dates. I'm really bummed about that as there was so many people I wanted to see. Not to mention the campout at Safari. A bunch of us bring campers and it's lots of fun. On the upside I get to see my son and his family in Juneau. I was there for the home birth of my granddaughter last year, and will be there this time for her first birthday. They are also pregnant with a second baby girl due in March. I love Alaska - its beyond beautiful and it's always hard to leave family. Also sad though to be missing classmates. At our age its predictable that some of the people I would see this year may not be at the 55th reunion. If any of my classmates are reading this - know that I will miss you and hope to see you the next time.
