Sherry's Story

Okay - I'm not a writer, so I am going to use the "Story Wizard" on this page. The questions are really spactic - seems there is no rhyme or reason the the order of the questions so here we go . . . What I want people to remember about me when I was in school? Kind, compassionate, a true friend. I always wanted to be a stewardess when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a silly idea. As it turns out, they were wrong...the funny part of all of this is that I never flew until I 45 years old. Since then I've flown several times and I love it - maybe I should have followed my dream and become a stewardess. Instead of carrying out my dreams as I child, I chose to work in an office environment. I've worked for the majority of my adult life, but worked contract while I was raising my 2 wonderful, adorable sons (which didn't include planning for retirement) Ooooppps! What a mistake. I don't do a very good job of relaxing. When I sit down and I think of all the stuff that needs to be done, whether at home or work, I feel guilty, so I'm always doing (something). The wildest thing I ever did in school - not much, occasionally skipped a class. I was a good girl. My hero is GOD. He is the one who sustains me and keeps me going. I don't know what others that don't have HIM in their lives do when tragedy strikes. I have always lived in WV - Alum Creek, South Charleston, Bradley, Huntington, back to South Charleston and currently in Scott Depot. I'm married to my high school sweetheart, Greg Blake. In 1994, he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. This certainly wasn't planned in our lives. I had quit working when I started a family and thought I would be a housewife and momma the rest of my life. After this happened, I realized that I needed to go back to full-time (I worked contract work at the time) to make sure my sons would be financially secure should Greg not survive. It is now 15 years later and he's doing great and we're doing great together. Now, you see why GOD is my inspiration. If I won $100 million, I'd give a portion of it to Hospice House and the Union Mission, then spend the rest on my immediate family, my extended family and others that I KNOW are in need. All welfare riders aren't in need. Actually, I believe there are only a few of them that are. The questionnaire asks "To be truly happy, you w...Expand for more
ould be where, doing what, with whom?" I am where I want to be, doing what I want to do, with whom I want to be. My current age is 51. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be old. I was so completely wrong. My career aspirations include working in a hospital as a social worker in gerontology. However, I think I'm never going to get there. I finally got a degree at the age of 47 and it seems that no one wants to take a 2nd look at me. I'm sure it's the age. I know no one has to put their age on an application, but think about it, when you put your employment history on there and state from 1976 - ?? Dead giveaway. Talking style - I still love the muslin tops & bell bottom pants. I love to wear the hippy style slanky dresses. I share my home with my hubby, which I find to be nice and quiet. You get one do-over. What do you do differently? Yikes! that mid-life crisis thing! That was a dangerous time in my life. Probably one of my oldest friends is Cathy Fannin Moran. Wow, we had some fun times, especially in Jr. High. We reconnected a couple of months ago and really enjoyed that. Thank you, Face Book. What about you would surprise everyone at your high school reunion? Not sure how to answer this one - but probably I've got more weight on me than I need, but most people say I don't look or act my age. Ask me that question - I would say I look & feel my age. But thanks to those who think otherwise. My first job was at National Life Insurance Co. of Vermont, where I got paid $3.50 to do secretarial and clerical work. What I remember most about it is I didn't know my way around Charleston. I lived up a hollow out Alum Creek most of my life and had a dad who wouldn't allow me to go into Charleston. He thought it was a dangerous place for a young girl to go so before I went to work in Charleston, I probably hadn't been in downtown 3 times in my life. That's funny, isn't it - that I'd lived in the Charleston area all my life and wasn't allowed to go "downtown"? Also, having been a country girl, I used the term poke for a paper bag. I remember telling the people at NLIV that I had brought my lunch in a poke. Some of them had never heard the term. So, I didn't answer all the questions on the Story Wizard, but I think I answered enought to fill you in on my life - has been quite boring, huh? But I love my life.
