Shirley's Story

I was born in Chincoteague, VA moved to Charleston, SC where my brother Bill was born and then to Orange, TX where our brother Don was born. I guess you could call me a Navy brat. Daddy retired from the Navy and we moved to Maryland where I entered Wheaton Woods Elementary School. My brothers and I made a lot of friends in Maryland and loved living there. I entered the 7th grade at Robert E. Peary High and what a shock to the system that was. You had to take showers with a hundred other girls all at one time. Mom never told me about that . . . I finished up the 8th grade and Daddy came home one day and said we're moving to Las Cruces, NM for a couple of years for his job. I was devastated. I'd be leaving all my friends and starting a new school where I wouldn't know anyone. I just knew I'd hate it. How wrong I was. I started 9th grade at Court Junior High and made so many friends it wasn't funny. Everyone was so friendly and open. They were quick to point out which classroom I belonged in and how to get to the gym. Simple things true but friendly all the same. I also met my first boyfriend at Court Junior High. I won't mention his name just to save him embarrassment. Yep, we went steady for a whole month but it was fun. Then I met the love of my life and we date from the end of the 9th grade almost all the way through my senior year. I attended Las Cruces High during the 10th grade and had never seen so many people in one place. I felt like I was always running from one class to the other just to get there on time. I remember one day having to go home sick and had all my books with me and the school nurse decided to weigh them. The books weighed something like 38 pounds and she asked me how I could carry all of them at one time, my response was I just did because I didn't have...Expand for more
time to stop at my locker between classes. My family and I returned to Maryland my Junior year and I was back at Peary High where I finished out my senior year and graduated. No, I didn't marry the love of my life. I found out he had been cheating on me after I moved back to Maryland (that really hurt). So much for long distance romances, huh? Time marches on and we have been in touch and are such close friends. He still lives in Las Cruces and I'm back in Maryland, just on the wrong paths at the wrong times. Always my first love. I've had my ups and downs and I have survived. I moved back to Las Cruces in 1976 with my three sons and my Mom. I worked at and attended NMSU. I met a wonderful man who worked at KGRT (Brian Hartz in the morning) we started dating in 1990. In 1996 Brian and I were married. In 1998 we moved back to Maryland where I worked until 2009 and then was laid off. Brian is still working. I have three grown sons with families of their own. Six grand-daughters ranging in age from 2 to 14 and two grandsons all cute as can be of course because they take after their Grammie. My middle son, Will is now a grand-father and I guess that makes me a great-grammie. I don't know how that can be as I'm still only 36. I now have a great-grand-daughter who is beautiful. I've lost touch with so many friends because of circumstances, many beyond my control but would love to hear from anyone and everyone I knew from the past. So please drop me a line and I will answer. I hope this finds everyone healthy and happy. May God always Bless you and yours. Love / Luck and Laughter to all . . . Hobbies: Reading(historical romances), watching movies(comedies & dramas / Disney / and sappy love stories). Working sudoku puzzles and taking care of my grand-children. Shirley (Austin) Hartz

I would like to wish my family and all my friends a Happy Easter. Even though you can't be with family and friends today, know that you are in their thoughts and prayers. I pray that all of you are safe and well as we all
