Shirley's Story
Life
Let's see, I've got an 18 year old daughter, and she lives with me in Lacey, WA (just outside Oly). I must have done something right because she still likes to talk to me. : ) I teach anthropology part-time at two different community colleges (Tacoma CC, and Pierce College in Puyallup). I'm sometimes amazed that I actually get to work in my field, and I really enjoy it. Unfortunately, teaching part-time isn't as regular as I'd like, and although I was teaching enough to live on for a few years, it's taken a decline too, and I'm looking for more work. Still teaching at least one class a term, but woefully UNDERemployed.*sigh*
We share the house with 3 dogs (my daughter's chihuahua/papillon mix, a chihuahua/toy fox mix, and I got custody of the insane rat terrier), 4 cats (five, if you include the semi-feral one outside that we feed), a noisy cockatiel, and a parakeet. . My mom, Helen Garhan, still lives in Estacada, and I've got two sisters in and around Portland, another sis in California and a brother in Alaska, too. I'm glad to live close enough to visit everybody in Portland & Estacada fairly often. My dad, Joe Barr - band and music teacher in Estacada for 30+ years- passe...Expand for more

I included a picture from a couple of years ago when I was still doing martial arts. What the heck, how often do you get to have a picture of yourself with nunchucks? I couldn't really afford it any more, but it was fun to do. Good stress relief, too!
I've been widowed since 2006, and just trying to keep it together for me and my daughter. She's trying to learn japanese on her own (and doing a good job of it too), is artistic, and wants to be a a gradeshool teacher, japanese translator, or zookeeper (although I spose the skills needed for zookeeping would transfer well to gradeschool classrooms nowadays too. : ) She's looking into college right now, and hopefully will be starting in the Fall.
The last couple of years, we've been in a non-profit pirate group - yes, pirates (we do fundraising for the foodbanks, and get to dress up and fire cannons and such). I actually ended up as the First Mate, somehow. It's a little crazy, but kind of fun at times. Gets us out of the house.
Needless to say, I'm still a bit of a geek and proud of it. Went to a scifi convention, with the pirates, and got a pic with two Klingons. Maybe I'll even post it on here. : )
