Shirley's Story
I graduated from Lawndale High in 1962. I went to Leuzinger High my freshman year. To many of you I was know as Lawndale's little beatnik, as the drama teacher had me recite some original poetry in 3 or 4 classes. He wouldn't tell anyone who it was, but that one of his students was a beatnik', so the nick name. I married shortly after graduation and moved to Oregon. Unfortunately that did not work out well, and I returned to the bay area. Over time I have worked at many jobs including, but not limited to, waitress, air line hostess, apartment manager, bank teller etc. In 1969, I moved to San Francisco where I lived until 1983. While in S.F., I became a street artist. I made ...Expand for more
jewelry and sold it on the streets of S.F. and Berkeley' In 1983, I moved to the Santa Cruz mountains where I lived five years. I love the mountains, but got flooded out in January of 1989. I decided to move back to Texas where I was born, and where my Dad lived so I could spend some time with him while I still could. I've been here ever since. Since being in Big Spring, I went to college at the local Jr. College. Much to my surprise, I made the deans list, and discovered I'm a pretty good artist. I took 3 ribbons in the art show including one first place. I'm now retired, and in a committed relationship. I have four little dogs. I never had any children so they are my kids.
