Shirley's Story

Wow... Where did these years go! I was married for the first time at 18. At 20 I had my first son and 21 my daughter. 10 years later I had another son and the next year I had twin identical boys! Yup... That's five. Now I have 5 grandchildren too. 3 boys and 2 girls. All the kids are grown and gone with families of their own, except my middle child we lost when he was 12. I lost my husband in 2002 and remarried New Years Eve 2007. (My new husband is in the old time pic on my profile. I used that pic on our wedding invites that were actually WANTED posters!) I dropped the long straight hair "do" at about 27 or so. I landed in New Mexico in 1984 and have been here since. I love it here. I am only 35 miles from Durango Colorado, at the base of the Rocky Mountains. I can visit the snow any time I want without having to deal with it in a big way! Most winters here if it snows it's gone by noon! Right now I am the Director of Finance for a Private School, of all things! Read on... you'll see why I say that! School... If I had only known.... Eight years of parochial school soured me on school... I still remember Sister Ignacious Lyola and her famous ruler and pointer. She broke two while I was in second grade and made an impression on me that I still remember like it was yesterday. Then there was Sister Natalia, famous for general meanness and playing favorites. I quit before my high scool graduation and didn't have enough sense to take the GED until I was around 24 or so. (I've slept since then!) Most of the kids that remember me from high school remem...Expand for more
ber cutting classes or whole days with me! I wasted a lot of time in High School and I made sure my children didn't make the same mistake! They have no idea what a twerp I was in High School! If I had my life to do over again, high school would be one of the things I would change! I wasted those years thinking I knew it all and being mad at the world for making me go to school! College... Started my own business in 1985 and decided I could stand some college classes. Started with Law, then accounting. Accounting made sense and came easily to me and I decided to complete my Associate in the Applied Science of Accounting degree. In 1995, my husband was injured and I suddenly needed to be sole breadwinner. I landed a pretty good job, but hit the glass ceiling without that 4 year degree. I made the decision to go back and complete my bachelors degree to increase my earning potential. This entailed my acquiring another AA degree to fulfill my arts requirements for the University. I started in the Fall of 1999 and I finished in December of 2000 at the age of 46 with an Associate of Arts in Business Administration Degree and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting Degree. It was hard work... but I wanted to share that little story because I know there are a number of people out there who feel they are too old to go back. You are not. I worked full time and crammed what should have taken a minimum of three years into 1 and 1/2 years. It can be done!!!! I am now taking masters classes! What a glutton for punishment I've become in my old age!!
