Shirley's Story
HI this is Shirley Holmes Russell. after being gone from Guthrie Center for 35 years, we finally moved back. My husband Steven and I adopted 4 of our 8 Grandchildren. After raising 3 children of our own, let me tell you it was much easier the 1st time around. Three of the Grandchildren are special needs children. We have Sarah 21 in Carroll Zachary is 19 almost 20(in October) he lives in Rock Valley and Rebecca is 16 and lives in Orange City. After Becky has Graduates in 3 years, we hope that we can relocate both Becky and Zachary closer to us. For the past 5 years we make the 4 hour drive once a month to bring the kids home for a visit. in the car a total of 8 hours in the car, and believe me you do get tired of sitting. Abby is going to be a senior in the fall. She is 18 and lives at home with us. Our son also lives with us and he works at Valley High School in Des Moines as custodian he is 45 and single. Kristi is our oldest daughter and she is married to Gerald Beaman, they live in Adel and have Josh 22, Tyler 21 and Bridgette 19. Kristi works for the Waukee school District as a cook. Our last grandson is Jacob, 22 and he lives in Jefferson. I like to do scrapbooking, sewing, camping and watching Movies. Steven and I have been married for almost 46 years. Laura is our youngest daughter and she is working at the new homestead.
