Shirley's Story
I entered St. Elizabeth Hospital School Of Nursing . 1961 Graduated in 1964 ,Worked part-time at Northside General & Harbourview , Sydney Mines . I injured my back ,Had 2 surgeries performed & changed professions . I worked at The Unemployment office for 2 years , then as Census Commissioner 2 terms ,Zellers part-time .I was on Northside Victoria School Board ^for 6 years . I married Hugh Mac Leod from Florence . We had 2 sons .Stephen & Paul .Unfortunately, Paul passed away from Cancer ,the same as my Dad ,at a very young age of 35 .Isold our home on Peppett St. & moved to Sydney . I like to keep active & there is more for seniors to do in Sydney ,when you are on your own. I was awarded the 125th Canada Decoration Medal for my volunteer work to Community & Country.I'm proud of that & I still volunteer when I can & I never expected to get a medal for it . I taught Beavers,&cubs ,taught Macrame at our church hall ,Served on the Board of Community Futures ,Community Development Fund ,Social Services Appeal Board . I loved it all & the people who shared these experiences with me .
I belong to NSGREA & try to attend meetings but health issues interfere with my activities now .But those things, too, shall pass & I'll be on the go again . I don't tolerate retirement well . There's not enough hours in the day . I don't know how I found time to work ,HAHA . Hope some of you will be in touch .
